Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

That little fella is the product of 2 billion years of evolution, do you have any idea how many terrawatthours that took? How much water? How much this activity reshaped the planet? All so you could ask that fella some silly questions

Worth it!

If we're using the total amount of energy over it's development, AI still loses hard because its creation also factors in billions of years of evolution for the humans who created it. When you then take into account how much less energy efficient AI is per response while only being capable of that single task, it's an even more bananas comparison.

Not that much, nature is efficient.

Humans use roughly 100W just to stay alive, so 876kWh a year, 26280kWh per life (assuming average historical lifespan of 30 years), since homo sapiens "emerged" there have been roughly 117 billion individuals so 3074760 terrawatthours, and this is ignoring any additional energy usage from doing any activity

And that's just from a single species that has only existed 190000-ish years

Gonna need a sauce on that bro cause it sounds like you pulled it out of ChatGpt's Ass

I googled each number as i needed them and can't be arsed to look them up again, they should be in the right ballpark just look it up

I love that we live in a time where everyone is accusing eachother of posting AI slop regardless of whether it is or not by the way

because everyone is still in an obsessive honeymooning period where they can tell the difference between generative outputs and manmade works at all times and they’re special enough to always be able to just know all the time, unlike those people who are just too dumb to know the differences.

i think once people accept the reality that they’re going to be fooled and there’s nothing they can do about it they’ll reassess their values and figure out more productive things to outrage farm about, but that might just be wishful thinking. we’ve lived in a post-truth world for quite awhile, it’s just painfully obvious now. (rhetorical) you will either learn to productively live in this world as it is or you’ll be jaded and hateful your whole life bc you decided to cling to values that fundamentally cannot exist in the current status quo anymore.

the point is, you do have a choice here. barring the total collapse of society as we know it - ML/AI research and generative techs are never going away, no matter how much tumblr wiccans pray to the moon for it to happen. a lot of people lack the wider context of the like, century-ish of history behind the machine learning industry. this is a very old space. these events were a very long time coming. everyone being a reactionary about it doesn’t actually care, bc if they did they’d have cared before it was the cool thing to be doing.

we can build a better society but we cannot do it without the means of production, which by now includes massive data centers, render farms, and other IT infrastructure powering the current ML/AI boom and all of big tech as we know it. acting like these things don’t exist just bc of a justified deep-seeded hate of big tech neofascists is the most ignorant fucking take i’ve seen grip the commons in my life and im still of the opinion there must be a degree of astroturfing involved because people on average just cannot be this dumb.

Hey so the thing is like 99% of what people use the internet for can be self hosted (including AI), meaning we already have the means to it. Gen AI is also pretty fucking useless outside of a chat bot

Also if you need facts on something you can, yknow, do what ypur supposed to do and check sources, authors, institutions, backgrounds of the funding, etc? These are things were supposed to be doing anyway for critical information and AI doesn't change that into "welp guess everythings fake news." People were lying on the internet long before AI

peeps who genuinely use unedited lm output as som kindsa source-.,.... r on the same level as crypto-bros for me....

Why do you type like this?

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago

poisoning the datapool for the scrapers, presumably.

welcome to the tower of babel when the people create new dialects and languages after the overlord destroys what they created because the overlord demands complete control of the populace, but the populace refuse to be controlled. the challenge from here is that now it's harder for ourselves to organize ourselves because we talk about these things differently

[–] BremboTheFourth@piefed.ca 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I probably shouldn't answer for her but gender euphoria

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

eh - naw - jus cuz i feel like it.,.iguess one cud argue its for whatevr poisoning, but thad doesn work anymor - todays LM training labs jus filter all the training data thru another LM which decides if the given data looks jumbled or not--- so id have to get mor sophisticated-

[–] BremboTheFourth@piefed.ca 5 points 1 day ago

I'm not sure that "feeling like it" and "gender euphoria" are all that distinct here but u do u
