General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Has anyone ever seen one where the answer wasn't no?

I'd love to see a "Get rid of the petitions system, its sole purpose is to make people feel they have been listened to while you continue to ignore them" petition get enough votes to be debated.

Damn, the only successful petition is one that furthers the government's surveillance goals.

I signed this 12 hours ago and still have not had the confirmation email… so I suspect there are many more signatures to come, and it’s over 2mil now

It's 2.26M now.

Which, assuming it's all valid UK citizens signing, is approaching 5% of the adults registered to vote (48M), and not far off 8% of those that voted last year (29M). It's all people who are politically active enough to sign a petition after all.

How can they think it's a winning move?

How can they think it's a winning move?

Didn't the brexit one get something like 5 million votes?

Yes, but that was part of the Tory election manifesto, so no petition was going to outweigh that one.

This was not mentioned at all in the Labour manifesto, or really before this week.

How does a homeless person without a smartphone get a job? Is the government going to supply smartphones to everyone?

Or anyone who simply doesn't want a smartphone. How do they get a job? Are you now forced to use a smartphone if you want to be a UK citizen?

The government has said it wants to ensure the scheme works for those who are not able to use a smartphone and will launch a consultation on how the service will be delivered later this year.

The new digital ID will be held on people's phones, in a similar way to contactless payment cards or the NHS app.

Yeah, they have no clue what they're doing. Maybe do the consultations and research before announcing your plan?

Unfortunately the main negative of this,

Is while smartphones make it easy to display. The data will be with the government. So not having a smart phone is easy to get around. Companies will likely be able to access the database and see your data.

UK unemployed having to pay for new gov ID to get a job. Is the real fucker.

This is the only thing giving me hope about the whole scheme-there seems to be nothing more than a headline or soundbite with no thought or infrastructure planning behind it.

Could the same people also start and sign a petition to introduce a wealth tax and remove the income tax?

[–] NovaSel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ok now you KNOW they won't accept that one

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Can't hurt to try and get some people to talk about it.

[–] NovaSel@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Fair enough

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Stop asking and start demanding.

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The petition is titled “Do not introduce Digital ID cards”

Sounds like a demand to me.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 1 points 5 hours ago

If that makes you feel better
