Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

Plate carriers and high caliber rifles are also getting sold out everywhere.

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Seems four out of ten Canadians aren’t paying attention.

That is because we actually can't.

The US has been a shit show since the end of WWII and they've fucked over countless countries and people, mostly for greed. It's laws are mostly setup first for greed, then for humans. Don't trust that place, whatever president comes next will at best only be marginally better than the current shit stain

You figure? You figure people who elect a psychopath who threatens to destroy my country economically before annexing it as the fifty-first state may have lost a lot of trust?

That's just crazy talk!

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 34 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Thursday’s poll found that 42 per cent of Canadians said they believe Carney will succeed in negotiating a new trade deal with the Trump administration.

Why? I don't want Canada to have a trade deal with the USA. I want Canada to isolate the USA. A trade wall, ideally armed with machine guns and flamethrowers. Let them stew in their own juices while we trade with countries that aren't prone to electing obvious man-toddlers into the highest possible office.

Tfw dual citizenship and can't trust myself 😬

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Get them! They're a double citizen!

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

What are you, the Trump Administration?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

op's excess citizenship must be studied so it can be properly harnessed and potentially extracted for our benefit. It's in the 10th amendment

[–] DarkDecay@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Lol. Canada was one of the only countries that used to trust America. No one wants to play with the bully

Yep. I say this as a resident of the United States and it will take at minimum decades to fix the damage that Trump has caused in just nine months. More likely (assuming the US survives) it will take multiple generations to fix the damage from Trumps second term.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

And that's only nine months how long to fix the full term damage.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seconded as another American - the brain drain alone from deterring immigration by conservatives may make that process even longer (or require a new system of governance entirely)

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also the brain drain by actively fighting to prevent scientific research.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago

Yet another debuff to the pile XD

This is so heartbreaking. I live on the border, frequently visit Ontario and Quebec, even honeymooned in the Maritimes. It's hard to imagine that I may never be able to do that ever again, but here we are.

I recall how bad I felt waking up in November 2024 knowing that awful things were going to happen, but alienating our closest ally was not one of them. Stay safe, Canada, I hope to see you again some time.

[–] sixpaque@lemmy.ca 5 points 23 hours ago

"I hope to see you again some time." Honestly, I hope so to.

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 day ago

Canadian here close to the border. I used to visit your country somewhat regularly, but I don’t think I’ll ever go down south again. My wife has some extended family in the states and they’ll never visit up here so I guess we just aren’t seeing them ever again. It’s unfortunate but that’s what video calls are for I guess.

As a Canadian, I say come visit still. We’d love to have you as long as you’re respectful and don’t bring pro-Trump speech with you (and given you’re on Lemmy I’m sure you’re the kind of person we’d welcome with open arms up here).

[–] Jason2357@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No one is against Americans vacationing in Canada. Many of us chose not to go down because of this stupid economic warfare the administration started. But that’s just business, as they say. It’s about asserting economic independence. Come visit. No worries, buddy.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

Seconded. Just make sure your American papers are in order for when you return.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 0 points 20 hours ago

Be, however, on your best behaviour because people are going to have a hair trigger on normal American shitfuckery these days.

4 in 10 thinks we can fix it at some point.

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If the USA gets their act together and can show that they can elect sane politicians 12+ years after trump/vance term ends.

That's my hope.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

12+ years total of sane politicians or in a row? Because I'm sure we can get a nonfascist in eventually, but 12+ years in a row of politicians who are merely sane is a big ask pretty much everywhere

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 2 points 21 hours ago

When you compare to the fascist felon there's a wide margin for sanity.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Their system prevents them from electing sane politicians.

I'm sucking down the hopeium bottle by bottle:

4 in 10 already distrusted the US.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 day ago

I don't even like the idea of flying over the USA to go on vacation to Mexico. We might just save up and go to a hot part of Europe instead, it's just a lot more flying.

[–] TwinTitans@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Seems like a low number honestly.

[–] mhague@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

So America can be a brutal regime that fucks over the global south and Canadians trust that. They ally that. Canada has been a close ally throughout so much evil.

But now we inflict a little evil on you guys and suddenly you don't trust us? I mean that kinda implies you guys liked us before?

It's like a moral abyss from the north pole to the Mexican border.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 21 points 1 day ago

Fair enough. We did a lot these last nine months to piss of the rest of the world.

[–] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Never trusted em to begin with

2 of them are lying, because they do not have the money to go down there anyways. 1 of them has to go down for work and the other is Danielle Smith.

[–] IHeartBadCode@fedia.io 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't blame the Canadians.

[–] basketugly@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't either, it's totally rational response. I feel sorry for Canadians too because they are powerless, and also because I unironically, sincerely, not-trying-to-be-an-edgelord believe that they will become a property of the US in the future.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The USA will regret that choice if they do it.

Keep in mind here that the Geneva ~~Checklist~~Conventions were created in part because of how CANADIANS behaved in WWI. See, all y'all have a serious problem if you bring Canada into your fold by hook and crook. Unlike the usual places all y'all go adventuring in to shoot or bomb brown people, most Canadians look like you. Talk like you. Can easily pass for you. We also have huge unsettled space in which to conceal ourselves while training, kind of like how the Taliban had no trouble finding safe-ish places to train in Afghanistan until they finally drove all y'all out.

So consider how hard it would be to defend yourselves from a Canadian version of the Taliban. We already have a history of being utterly ruthless on the battlefield, and that's when none of the combatants were actually a direct threat to our nation and nor were they occupying our nation. You think our forces will be better-behaved if you annex us...?

There won't be a safe place in the USA where Canadians couldn't strike.

[–] basketugly@lemmy.world 0 points 14 hours ago

I don't doubt you or the people. Please don't shoot the messenger, but the image that I see is more like economic possession. I don't see any Afghanistan style occupation or conflict, but rather economic control by proxy and that there are those amongst your people that will sell the rest of you out. The aristocrat class will remain as usual and they will align with US interest. I hope I am wrong because I prefer a world where power is balanced as much as possible.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 12 points 1 day ago

The other four trust them exactly as much as we trusted them before, which is zero.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is pretty much how it was between us and Croatia. I think it's actually improved between the peoples, while the governments...they are always xenophobic, aren't they?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

I don't think "xenophobic" at all describes the Canadian government's attitude to the USA right now. If anything, they're being too kind.
