Sorry, but JIF was already taken by a brand of peanutbutter for almost 30 years before the Graphics Interchange Format was created.

Never mind that when written out like that, the first word of the acronym tells you how to say it. Otherwise we'd be pronouncing that word like "giraffe-icks."

I am 70% in agreement on that. It would be 100%, but someone once pointed out to me that SCUBA is pronounced differently than the words making up the acronym. It's not "oonderwater." Maybe we should say "Skuhbuh" instead of "scoobuh." 🤣

Fair. It's just another SNAFU/snaffuh.

And how do you pronounce lazer or fubar for that matter?

[–] SanctimoniousApe 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The first one is "Pew! Pew!", while the second only gets used when I'm thrown out for being too drunk & disorderly.

(Which is to say "never" since I don't drink.)

But the "U" is in the middle. Don't acronyms tend to follow something like "the first letter is pronounced like the word it is based on, then the rest of it is pronounced in the way which sounds like the 'coolest' or 'easiest to say' word"?

Idiots will argue over anything.

[–] SanctimoniousApe 7 points 1 day ago

But without them, you'd be the low-hanging fruit labeled "idiot."

Probably not the only thing you’re wrong about.

Counterpoint: the official pronunciation sounds like "yiff"; so, no thank you.

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Are you Swedish or something?

[–] webadict@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Whoa, man, that's ridiculous. They're just a furry.

[–] SanctimoniousApe 2 points 1 day ago

Swedes can be furries, too!

[–] SanctimoniousApe 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ja.

(For those who may not know: the J is pronounced like an English Y in a Germanic language.)

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 3 points 1 day ago

Gif is correct, IDGAF what anyone says.

[–] Coskii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Coskii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So is gif if you really want to split hairs.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Jee Aye Eff

[–] brian@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The only argument I ever have in these discussions is that if you have to spell it differently to get the pronunciation "correct", maybe it's not a very solid stance?

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That argument doesn't hold much weight in English. Plus they were riffing on Jif, it wouldn't make sense to use the exact spelling. More importantly it's an acronym.
