Kinda want it just to see the racists lose their minds.

Can't believe X-Men is going woke!

[–] GorGor@startrek.website 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Lol.

Yet this is what they will say, completely unironically and without a smidge of self awareness.

Its like they watched the OG xmen cartoon and were like, those sentinels are super cool. Sure wish I could just break into peoples houses and snatch em up, and throw them in cages.

he's a great actor. Will do fine.

I'm mostly wondering how they'll handle Magneto, the whole holocaust backstory won't fit anymore unless they set the movie in the past, or some magic bs.

[–] TammyTobacco@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Lucky for Hollywood, we have a fresh new batch of Nazis to pull stories from!

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Adopted brothers?

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah I'm with the other guy you have to keep the Magneto backstory. It's so wonderfully perfect for the character and for the current times. Just do timey whimey shit, I don't care. The store is way too important to risk for something so trivial is it was a while ago. For that matter I don't know why these kind of projects bother setting definitive dates.

there already so little Jewish characters in the media, I think growing up magneto was the only jew I saw on tv.

and representation matters.

I want kids to grow up knowing they can be whatever they want, maybe even extinct the human race.

Just say he has magically magnetic regenerative powers which make him age "slower than a regular human". Don't specify any more.

Done and done.

Just like handsome Deadpool conveniently lacked regenerative powers.

i have no real arguments against that,

it just gives me the ick, that's all. I just don't like it.

And now, like an idiot, came up with the idea of setting the X-Men in the early 90s. and now I really want that. and am. very sad that it won't happen.

My imagination hurt my feelings

My imagination hurt my feelings

Oh boy, I know that feeling only too well. Hang in there buddy. Haha.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I need a support group for "imagined something that doesn't exist and am sad"

~~Ba Dum Tss~~

Edit I didn't mean to put this here, my bad. Wrong reply.

FUCK, JUST REALISED I DID THAT AGAIN WITH THAT STATEMENT

I swear I didn't mean it

I like Fishburn, and I think he has the energy for a teacher and a leader. He might be a bit bulky for a wheelchair bound psychic, but you could certainly make worse casting choices.

If he wants to do it, he's a great pull to play Xavier.

I'm kind of tired of Xavier on the big screen, though. Stewart did an amazing job at sharing the key Xavier moments already.

There's good reasons they always kill Xavier or send him to space, in the comics.

I think movie audiences are ready for some of the X-Men sagas that don't have Xavier anywhere nearby.

Edit: But if they're doing the Krakoan era, Fishborme is a great choice. They'll have to lean into the controversial headlines though - Xavier is not a hero in that story. Fishborme would rock the part, anyway.

[–] ApollosArrow@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

It would certainly change some dynamics. A big thing between Charles and Magneto is that Magneto went through some real shit and wants to end humans all the time, while Charles comes from wealth and wants everyone to hold hands.

If Charles were black, it would instead give a Dr Martin Luther King JR vibe, where they have both faced some cruelty in their lives, but Charles would still want peace, while Magneto would want revenge.

[–] mhague@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I always thought of Xavier a little bit in terms of FDR and Stephen Hawking. He's not a character defined by being white but if it isn't an old white man in a wheelchair then it will probably feel like a different character to me.

But in the overall messaging of X-Men you don't need the guy in charge of the outcasts to be an upper class white guy for it to work. They just need a wise backbone to build around.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If it's not an upper class white guy bankrolling the school and all the rebuilding it goes through then how will it be funded?

I'm assuming the Xavier family comes from old money that probably got rich from... Idk how do families get that much wealth?... probably slavery or some other form of exploitation.

Only half joking about the question. Some good stories are from the X-Men when they don't have the school and are on the run.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Funniest idea: it's the body the Shi'ar made that can walk and do everything. They just didn't realize that "whoops we made the skin too dark" might be a problem.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

That's great. They didn't realize it would make a difference. They can say it all looks the same to them.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

also patrick stewart is pretty old, and very low energy, if you seen him in PICARD, he seems very tired in general. why not use macavoy again?

Do it, I dare you. Worst that can happen is a great performance.

I first saw Nick fury in ultimate spiderman so learning he had a white version was so weird. I think they should go for it.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Meh, I don’t hate the idea, but I want an unknown. Fishburne is already Goliath anyway.

I always pictured Xavier being in his 40s while the X-men are early 20s-early 30s. I don’t have an actor in mind.

[–] GCanuck@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I dont have an issue with Prof X being black, but I do feel that Laurence is too fat to play him. I just don’t feel like Prof X would be that undisciplined.

But I guess if he lost the weight it could work.

Also, I think unless we’re jumping past any origins he’s too old.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm curious how they will handle certain character origins going forward.

For example Magneto's history with the Holocaust is important to his character. A Magneto without that connection would be a different character. However those events ending ~80 years ago, plus 10 years so you have a young boy old enough to understand what is going on... you end up with a 90 year old Magneto.

Given that Magneto and Prof X should be similar in age... A new/unique origin for both characters sorta makes sense. Of course at that point you probably just have new characters entirely. Also there is no way we don't have our tent pole mutants in the MCU, at least when it starts.

But! If Secret Wars has us mashing universes together. Maybe, like the Fantastic Four, mutants come from a world where similar events happen later, or they come from a different point in history.

Also means you can custom fit the new universe to match whomever you cast in certain roles. So if Laurence Fishburn Prof X needs to have a certain history, he can have it.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

thats why macavoy and fassbender works, and ian mckellen and and patrick stewart, they are almost around the same ages.

laurance doesnt have the comic or film accurate build.

[–] RaoulDuke@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

But I’m bald! I can play him strictly because of that!

[–] Okokimup@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

I'd love him in that role.

[–] antaymonkey@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I was actually hoping for Giancarlo Esposito.

he was already in MCU, although I think there is so much MCU, that some actors played multiple characters already. just minor ones.

[–] UsefulInfoPlz@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

I’d be all for it.
