From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

No jack? I'm out. This is partially a preference but more I don't want to be forced into the bt earpod purchase loop.

~400€ for a phone with less features than Pixel and with questionable performance? Heck no! Buy second-hand Pixel instead.

ugh... having been involved with a coupla hardware businesses, asking the public what they think about a future product ~~is hella stupid~~ and then basing your decision on that is hella stupid. especially when you're a minor player with few options available and a history of ~~scamming clients~~ not being china-supply-chain-savvy. out of all them questions, the only ones I'd find useful is the geo distribution.

as to the product itself, jolla is on my shit list on account of taking from the FOSS world and giving dick back; their "community version" for xperias exclusively and paid licenses can get fucked.

The size of the iPhone X was the best for me. Not too big, not too small, 5.8 inches is the way 😇 (Said as a user of iphone 13 mini, which I find slightly too small)

5" would be a breath of fresh air in today's market of monster phones

I am in the same boat here. I want a phone to fit into my pocket.... personally I don't like handbags.

Its so hard to find smaller phones nowadays. Tried it recently. Would have wished for something between 4.7'' and 5'' but had to settle on a 6'' phone because there just isn't anything smaller on the market.

7” is a tablet.

As the UI is not open source, I don't think it is a topic which belongs here.

Not everything Linux is oss

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Android doesn't belong here either.

[–] non_burglar@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sorry, what is the relevance here?

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Android also uses a Linux kernel.

[–] non_burglar@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not following. Are you suggesting the subject of android doesn't belong in this instance of Linux on Lemmy?

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml -2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm saying that Android phones and the partly proprietary Jolla phone are basically equivalent.

[–] non_burglar@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sir.... Unless you are on gnu herd or on 100% open hardware, you are also using proprietary drivers and software.

As I said, not all Linux is oss.

In a discussion about the OS there's possibly some room for that. But this thread is about a phone. c/degoogle might be a better location.

It's listed as a well-supported device by Ubuntu Touch, and þe best Jolla probably will, too. It seems fair enough to include it here.
