  • Preshave: Cold Water
  • Brush: Zenith 506U XS Horse 🐎
  • Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89
  • Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (11)
  • Lather: The Goodfellas Smile Amber Fougère
  • Post Shave: Pitralon Original After Shave

With bowl lathering, the challenge is sustainable. I tried again the Pitralon after shave - maybe it had improved in the meantime 🤔. Well, much like the Pyramids, time does not seem to affect it very much.

Have a good day!

AA Day 12! Took a closer look at my growth pattern today, and decided to try something different as a result. Ended up being my smoothest shave yet with no irritation. Now hopefully I can remember what I did for future shaves! :)

Kismet Blade - Losing My Edge
#Monthofweckoning

I tried another slurry lather shave. 13 minutes. I loaded too heavily which required adjusting the lather hydration on both passes. Naturally, this made more of a mess which triggered my OCD and diverted my attention from shaving. Then I got carried away with enjoying shave-feel on the first pass. I was actually surprised at the 13 minute time. I expected to find that I had spent 20 minutes on a "quick" shave today.

~~Stockholm~~ Solingen syndrome is starting. I found myself thinking that I should just use 70th Anniversary until it is gone. And I think I'm Wecking my appreciation for my growing straight razor collection. Straight razors. Who needs them? You have to strop them, hone them, keep them from rusting. That's an awful lot of bother.

No SOTD pic. I had an idea for a simple composition, but ran out of energy yesterday. I have added a photo to the edge album, though. This is more of a status photo than one that shows something new. I think the edge feels slightly duller than when new, but the condition is pretty stable.

How thick would a whisker look if placed in those photos?

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 year ago

That is a very good question. Gillette claims that a typical beard hair is 0.1 mm or 100 microns. I found an interesting article that claims beard hair varies from 17 microns to 180 microns. This article also explains why beard hair is more difficult to cut.

I have calibrated my microscope so that I can take measurements. This means that the scale you see at the bottom left of each photo shows the distance of 50 microns in that photo. Using that scale you can get an idea of how big a beard hair between 17 and 180 microns would be.

(Sorry for the late reply. I haven't found a good phone app that provides Lemmy notifications.)

Oh wow, so a whisker would be a lot bigger than I thought at that scale.

Yes. I often comment that a little irregularity in the steel at the apex is inconsequential and that's why.

The Twelfth Day Of Weckoning is upon us

  • Brush: Rubberset 400-3 with a 26 mm unbleached Zenith boar knot at 56 mm loft

  • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Oceana

One unplanned extra hotel shave. Our flight home landed late and we're staying in the airport hotel. Quick two pass affair before bed.

Midnight Stag Challenge

Gear Pic :: Video

䷀ General Notes

Lately, I've been trying the reduction of load time on my slurry lather and just 3 swirls was enough today, easily. I didn't even use the luxurious stuff left in the knot.

䷀ Razor and Blade Notes

(Timeless - Stainless Steel .68 - Open Comb ::: Gillette - Nacet - M ‹510 uses›)

Same: First pass has some tugginess to it. But no irritation that lasts longer than a little tuggy stroke. Latter passes feel fine and give a reasonably close shave.

Razor and Blade Performance/Comfort Rating: 2 out of 5 (Okay)

䷀ Soap Notes

(Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag - White Label)

I just love all the aspects of this scent!

Scent Strength: 6/10, nicely present during shaving.

Lather... 3 swirls of loading, just to see how little soap we need. Got a fine lather, that did need a bit of water on third pass, but that's fine. Plus the squeeze lather from the knot if I needed it. And of course, that was super luxurious.

Hydration: Perfect (for me)

  • 2 sec load with a Very Wet brush
  • = 4 passes of lather

Bowl: No Bowl

䷀ Brush Notes

(Zenith - r/wetshaving MOAR BOAR B35/508A XL ‹35 uses›)

Same: Comfortable soft tips that do flex some, but that are supported by a base with strong backbone. As with all young boars, I look forward to the tips splitting with more uses and getting softer with use.

During the Shave Feel:
  Cheeks: Felt blade but comfortable
  Neck: Felt blade but comfortable
After the Shave Closeness:
  Cheeks: Close Shave
Neck: Several hairs are showing some tip length (still a pretty good shave)
