drug probe?

Lee has gone through three rounds of police questioning on suspicions of using marijuana and other illegal drugs at the home of a hostess working at a high-end bar in Seoul's Gangnam district on multiple occasions since early this year, including last Saturday, when the questioning lasted for 19 hours.

jesus christ, what a country

the police and justice systems in Japan and Korea are awful. Seriously look up articles and videos on the subject. There is plenty out there, from credible sources.

They're stupidly strict about things like pot but unhealthy drinking habits are encouraged. The culture around these things causes so much harm.

[–] DanglingFury@lemmy.world 22 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The US was like that 20-30 years ago

[–] Codilingus@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It still is in some states 😥

[–] Soulg@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Nah, it's infinitely worse in Asia.

[–] pepperonisalami@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

It's like that in most of East Asia (and Southeast as well). I don't know what will turn that around, Thailand's cannabis legalization was the only hope but that is also at risk of being taken back.

Hmm where have we heard that before

I highly recommend Tokyo Vice, it shows how the police operate and how they work with Yakuza. Tokyo Vice is based on a real American reporter's book who lived in Japan.

Don't forget Singapore

[–] Jiggle_Physics@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I didn't mention other countries because I feel like most people, in the west, look at the law in most of south east asia as harsh and crooked. However a lot of people seem to look at Japan, and to a lesser extent Korea, as these very low police corruption places because the general crime rates are low and that there is so much emphasis on etiquette.

I know right! Taiwan's justice system is also worse than those EU states, but admittedly already miles better than Japan and Korea. Some people are pushing for the abolishment of capital punishment (death penalty), but the problem is about half of the population do not seem to like this idea. sigh

Damn, haven't seen Parasite and did not know who he was but that is messed up.

[–] fung@sh.itjust.works 62 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It's a great movie, definitely worth your time.

[–] tdawg@lemmy.world 32 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Just a note for anyone curious. It's a rather intense thriller so if you are squimish or otherwise are turned off by serious subject matter than consider passing on it

[–] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Thanks for the heads up. Definitely not interested now. Appreciate that.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

But at the same time it's a comedy, so if you don't mind a darker and clever comedy, give it a go.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Yah watch Martyrs instead (this is bad advice)

[–] EfficientEffigy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Thanks! Definitely added to my watch list!

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It’s absolutely horrifying. I love it. Hard recommend.

Bonus reccos: Climax, I Stand Alone, Irreversible (I love Gaspar Noe’s work)

Climax is my favorite I think. Enter the Void os my favorite, but I recommend that less often because I feel like everyone has seen that.

[–] EfficientEffigy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I did watch irreversible with and THAT scene in the underpass scarred me for life.

Thank you for the follow up recommendations.

[–] Lonewanderer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Love to see another Gaspar Noe fan. I watch Enter the Void at least once a year. 8 years later I still find Easter eggs I never noticed.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s one of my favorite movies!

I really enjoyed Vortex, despite its mixed reviews.

I think my favorites of his go Void, Climax, then I Stand Alone.

What about you? Do you have favorites of his?

[–] Lonewanderer@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Vortex really diverted the most from his usual thriller, shock style. It was really well made, however, so I still enjoyed it.

I'd say my favorites are Void, Love, and Climax in that order. Very memorable movies for me.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Aha! I haven’t seen Love—will watch tonight! I believe I’ve seen all of his others. I did skip Lux Æterna, but maybe I’ll check that out one day.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That's too intense, watch Antichrist instead (also bad advice)

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 years ago

CHAOS

REIGNS

[–] Betch@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah I do intend to watch it at some point.

[–] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Dittoing the other guy. Wherever it is on your watch list, bump it to the top. It's that good

[–] prole@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 years ago

Fantastic movie. Great director, if you like Parasite, check out his other films.

[–] Strawberry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 years ago

i honestly can't get over this, it's so bleak and depressing. the cops drove him to suicide just because he smoked weed and hung out and did drugs with some lady. and they questioned him for fucking 19 fucking hours for weed! that's so fucked! why are we still treating people like this?
