The ship was denied because there were stink bugs on the ship. Australian biosecurity laws are very strong.

Thanks for saving us all a click. And good on the Aussies for protecting their ecosystems (and probably crops too to be fair).

Yeah we don't do that. Biosec are good but internally states are lax. I live in world heritage rainforest and about 8 cats are left to roam constantly but I can't, sensibly I might add, walk my dogs in there on leash.

We log our old growth forests, allow gardeners to plant invasive species and knock down rainforest to do so. It's good shit lmao.

Australia is the same contradictory profit driven neoliberal shit as all the Thatcher-Reagan influenced nations.

Bummer, but at least you got rid of most of the guns.

I’ve got a kid in kindergarten, and he has to practice running outside to hide behind a neighbor’s barn if there is a shooting there.

I’d move to Australia (or NZ, sorry) in a minute if I could afford to. Even if I have to leave my dog in quarantine for months.

Yeah I mean I wouldn't live in the usa but also living in Australia is crap in a lot of ways. Basically it's becoming more like the usa plus insane cost of living and UK surveillance state.

we also still have plenty of guns. About 15 per 100 people iirc. We're just not a completely broken society (yet) and we don't allow autos or most semi autos which is sensible. I target shoot myself and so does my wife :p

Yeah, those stink bugs are a major problem in Canada now

[-] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 10 months ago

We have them in New England now too. I’m not sure if they damage crops in our area, but they all try to get through our (quite necessary) mosquito screens in the fall. Somehow a few seem to squeeze under and then we find them in our curtains.

At least they move slowly

Australia also has its fair share of shitty laws as well

Makes perfect sense.

Musk was a name originally given to a substance with a strong odor obtained from a gland of the musk deer.

aren't stink bugs native to au?

[-] Hildegarde@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

If the species were native they wouldn't have denied the boat for it. The bugs were yellow spotted stink bugs, (wikipedia) which are native to mainland Asia and are an invasive species that destroys fruit crops.

Yeah I did it right after the first reply. The original post collapsed so I couldn‘t at first see the link directing to the article (still new on Lemmy). Have a great start in the new year 🙂
