Air Canada fucked me harder than any airline ever did, delaying a flight for 6 hours then landing in a different city and adding a 3 hour turnaround because the flight crew didn't have enough hours to complete the remaining leg. And when we finally got to the original transfer, it was midnight so the airport closed and shifted the next leg to the following day and refused to pay for a hotel for the night. A 17 hour flight turned into 40 and added several hundred dollars they refused to give back. Shady as fuck and by far the worst flight I've ever experienced, and one of my bags didn't show up until 3 days later.
Did you go through the CTA process? It sounds like you'd be entitled to compensation.
It really bugs me that we have legislation, but they made it so the airlines can drag it out and lie about their obligations without any sort of penalty. They probably pay such a tiny fraction of what's owed, that they can pretty much ignore it.
Nationalize it, fuck 'em.
They were at one point. It's been downhill ever since they privatized it.
Probably first in lost baggage...
Hard to believe they are this bad still with all of the government handouts over the years...
I explicitly go out of my way to avoid Air Canada and WestJet. They are both abysmal airlines. WestJet used to be good... but lately, it's become a competition between them and AirCanada to see who can fuck things up more spectacularly.
I'd say that Air Canada also lands last in customer service, quality of service, comfort, and adhering to the rules for customer rights... and pretty much EVERYTHING else.
I flew outside the country for the first time in a while and my flights (domestic and international) on other airlines were an eye-opener. Both the Canadian airlines are an embarrassment these days.
Yeah once you fly with other non-Canadian airlines you realize just how awful flying domestic and international on Air Canada really is (and the discount airlines like Swoop were even worse). I travel a lot for personal and work, and I try my best to book Qatar, Emirates, Turkish, etc. Hell, even KLM is better and they aren't amazing. Same with Ethiopian Air... not amazing or even good but better than Air Canada.
They don't need to be on time. They steal tax dollars to subsist like the cancer they are, to both Canadians as a whole as well as the airline industry.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
The country's biggest carrier landed 63 per cent of its flights on time last year, placing it last among the continent's 10 largest airlines, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics firm.
Comparably, a ranking of European counterparts placed Dutch carrier KLM in the 10th spot with a score of 76 per cent, 13 points higher than Air Canada.
John Lawford, the executive director and general counsel of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) in Ottawa, said that the on-time percentage metric is one that matters a lot to consumers.
The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), an independent regulatory body that mediates and resolves disputes between airlines and passengers, has been working through a backlog of complaints.
He also acknowledged that high load factors — when all planes are almost fully booked — result in more "spilling traffic" when flights are cancelled, as passengers scramble to rebook with competitors and may arrive hours or days later than planned.
That outcome stood in contrast to the tales of travel nightmares from 12 months earlier, when thousands of passengers saw their flights delayed or cancelled, largely due to poor weather.
The original article contains 665 words, the summary contains 184 words. Saved 72%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
