If the message is a long and important one, I sometimes postpone replying to when I have a bit of free time and in a calm environment to collect my thoughts and write a good reply.

Then I proceed to forget about the long and important message for 16 hours and write a half assed reply because "fuck I should've said something 15 hours ago, now they hate me fuck fuck fuck".

I have learned, that in those circumstances a simple "wow this is a long text, I don't have the time right now to give it the proper thought. Let me get back to you when things calm down"

Or simply, "sorry busy right now, let me get back to you later"

This way, you acknowledge the message but also give yourself breathing room.

I enable read receipts on my phone for this very reason. I know that as soon as I click it to read it, they will know and I will need to reply. If I’m not in a good head space (or just busy), then I defer. It keeps me accountable and makes sure I don’t ghost those I care about (accidentally of course).

Idk about iOS but android has a snooze notification feature which really helps.

My ex sent me a text asking a question, I didn't respond when I noticed it because she would have been asleep and promptly forgot about it. In three weeks it'll be two years.

I should wait until then and reply with a simple "Nope".

"I hope I didn't wake you up..."

I'm a "all my text messages are automated notifications and verification codes" kind of person

I'm a reply instantly kind of person. Unless I was busy and forgot. Then I'm a reply never kind of person.

"It depends"

I'm a reply immediately because I want to talk to you person

[-] Ziglin@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Depends on the person, length of the message and when I read it.

[-] nifty@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

To the person on the receiving end (blond character): yes, sometimes the sender (brunette character) may be innocent autist or awkward, but after a while this can start to hurt and be emotionally taxing. Take care of yourself, and make some decisions about that person you may not necessarily like! Being autistic doesn’t mean being uncaring, someone who loves or likes you will know the difference. Or if they don’t then you need to determine in some way that you’re not being emotionally abused.

They're the same person. They finally got "k" as a reply and had thoughts about it.

[-] naticus@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Lol yeah they progressed to becoming elderly, with glasses and grey/white hair. Same shirt.
