Can we take a moment to appreciate the very real possibility that the Soviet space program of the 50s would have been able to land a lunar probe better than the current Russian program?

(Obligatory /s, space is hard and shit goes wrong sometimes)

Space is hard.

The Moon surface is harder.

Sorry.

[-] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

They don't call it hard vacuum for nothing

[-] Ildar@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

In USSR there were 16 successful and 17 unsuccessful missions to moon Yes it hard, its a rocket science

[-] Remavas@programming.dev 9 points 1 year ago

Forget the moon, the USSR put probes on Venus (the Venera missions).

[-] Techmaster@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

In Soviet Russia the space probe IS the surface of the moon!

50s ussr was driven by personal ambition for position in a totalitarian society. No ambition is allowed in Russia now

[-] meldroc@lemmy.world 45 points 1 year ago

The "probe" is actually a Russian tank turret lollipopped there from Ukraine.

They're de-nazifying the moon.

they'll find a way to blame NATO for the "nuance"

Sanctions since 2014 and 2022 have hobbled the Russian space programme, cutting it off from western technology and funding. The launch in 2019 was delayed because a landing radar that Roscosmos planned to import from the west was no longer available after 2014, Egorov said. After attempting to manufacture the radar domestically, Roscosmos determined that it was unnecessary for the mission. (source)

Huh, turns out landing radar IS necessary.

[-] Zoboomafoo@yiffit.net 5 points 1 year ago

I disagree, the impactor didn't even get into orbit before fulfilling its mission, I doubt the radar would have even been turned on at that point

[-] Jeeves2@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago

I honestly feel bad for whoever works at Roscosmos. They probably applied there specifically because they were inspired by the Soviet space program and wanted to avoid military service, and now their budget is being cut to nothing so Putin can keep the war going, and they can't cooperate with any other space agencies because of the sanctions. The ISS was their fundraiser for the last 20 years since they were the only ones with a spacecraft that could stay docked for the entire time an astronaut was onboard, so they charged every other space program for lifeboat services and used that to cover most of their budget. But now Elon Musk even took that, and I'd be genuinely afraid to ride a Soyuz when there's a good chance the guys building it haven't been paid in months and are just there to avoid being bullet sponges.

Special "landing" operation.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 10 points 1 year ago

Alas, they were aiming at the Ukraine.

[-] Puschkul@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago

Like Wernher von Braun famously stated: I aim for random fields and civilian homes around London, but sometimes i hit the moon.

3000 terrified smiles of a new retiree who doesnt want to lose access to imported booze at the PX. That tax free Cuervo hits just right, Vova, please don't take it away from me. I wasn't in Chechyna, but I still dream about it.....

[-] wheresmypillow@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

All according to the plan.

[-] LeonidasFett@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Maybe the moon lander joined NATO.

Nuance means turn off your brain lately for some reason

Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.
