"Watch the Irishman Suffer" is practically it's own genre of Star Trek episode. Chief O'Brien needs a break, he's just a regular dude who has witnessed his own death too many times.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemm.ee 22 points 2 years ago (2 children)

O'Brien and Kim are the official star trek punching bags. Name a bad thing, it probably happened to one of them

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Even Keiko gets fed up with O'Brien. She yells at him all the time and then straight-up leaves for months at a time.

[–] PlasmaDistortion@lemm.ee 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The only good Keiko episode is the one where she is possessed.

[–] Apeman42@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

"Keiko vs Pope Karen: Creationism Clash" at least made me take Keiko's side for once.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've heard Koreans described as the Irish of Asia.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago

Based exclusively off Kim's treatment, I'd say that tracks lol

[–] Magnetar@feddit.de 13 points 2 years ago

His crime being the most normal and relatable character in all of Star Trek

My partner and I love when we get to "...another 'O'Brien is crazy episode!'"

[–] Ticktok@lemmy.one 8 points 2 years ago

The fact that he was a major plot point for the RedShirts book is one of my favorite things about that book. (Or rather, his "legally different because of copyright" Irish equivalent)

Space:
the final frontier.
These are the rotations, of the space station.
9!
Its continuing mission:
to explore one strange world;
to be seeked out by new life and new civilizations;
to boldly stay where no one has stayed before!

[–] PierrAlz@startrek.website 11 points 2 years ago

And keep an eye on a strange wormhole!

[–] Ladybird@lemm.ee 21 points 2 years ago

POPE KAREN is perfect, ahahaha

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

She did serve on DS9. I bet she did give some version of this speech lol

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

She definitely used that terminology to describe Dukat and commented loudly on how weirdly horny he was for Kiera as much as possible in his presence.

Garak definitely encouraged her to do that last one. He knows a delightful agent of chaos when he sees it.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Now I really need some beta canon, preferably a proper cast radio play, chronicling their shenanigans. Plus a smidge of maudlin/harrowing, for that minty aftertaste.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I can definitely see Marriner and Garak being the weirdest, most chaotic besties possible while simultaneously being ready to stab each other whenever required

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

He would definitely be coyly keeping up his charade, like he did with Julian throughout the show, but Mariner just keeps citing all this actual evidence that Star Fleet has on him now. I could totally see a scene where he says something along the lines of, "You underestimate me, Mariner. I may be a simple tailor, but I am still a Cardasian. We are a hardy people."

And then she responds, "Didn't you get addicted to a pain relieving device, implanted in your brain to make you resist torture, because the station was a little too cold?"

Garak ends up really liking her because of her competence, and willingness to call him out, which gives him opportunity to practice his lies, that he hasn't had for a long time on DS9.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 4 points 2 years ago

Headcanon accepted.

They'd totally be besties because Marriner is just sociopathic enough to absolutely cut through his bullshit AND play the game

[–] keeb420@kbin.social 18 points 2 years ago (5 children)

My only problem with this is rom isn't an idiot. Well most of the time, sometimes they wrote him painfully stupid.

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 12 points 2 years ago

That's Grand Nagus Rom, to you!

He got less stupid as the series went on and they developed his character to actually have skills.

[–] ARxtwo@startrek.website 9 points 2 years ago

He’s just a different kind of Ferengi, and that’s ok.

[–] hglman@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Season 1, he was so supposed to be an idiot/cruel. They obviously saw that was a dead end char arc.

[–] MadMenace@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

Yeah, as if he's the first engineer ever to lack common sense and be slow with social cues.

Workers of the galaxy unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains!

[–] djmarcone@lemm.ee 11 points 2 years ago

Yeah this is pretty accurate really

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The growth of all the goblins is one of my favorite parts, especially Nog

[–] Kerred@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I don't think I have rooted for a character in a show before but I really really wanted to see Nog and Rom succeed.

[–] emptyother@programming.dev 11 points 2 years ago

She forgot to mention the alcoholic potato alien who never shuts up.
