To paraphrase the Beatles "they get high with a little help from their friends"

This is another of those "things that I would like but are pretty unrealistic." If the goal is to cut down on beef, the price would either go up drastically or we'd put farmers into something less lucrative and just import our beef.

Regardless, the public, of whom many if not most eat beef, would be furious. I struggle to see a government that could pass this and last an election without having this overturned by the next government rather quickly.

That being said, it'd be nice. But nice in the same way that everyone being vegetarian and not wearing sweatshop clothes would be nice.

I'm still not sure I get this. Is it just odd for them to be looking at a hangnail?

That's a pretty bold leap. I'm pretty confident the guy screaming removed**removed on the street has bigger problems than the lack of free transit. (Also, if you've ever take a skytrain you'll notice how payment is rather optional for most folks with issues.)

Tourists bring in a boatload of money. I'm not even sure how you would enact a mechanism like this... A BC toll taker at every port, airport and land crossing? How much are we charging to pay for that, that somehow doesn't hurt tourism industries but also completely subsidizes our use of public transit?

I love public transit, think it's important but this seems more one of those "things I would like but don't seem particularly feasible."

(Also, if you've ever been on the N20 or even BLine and watched a mentally unhinged man threatening women, children, non white people or other vulnerable people, well... Not wildly sure I want to drop the barrier to entry to zero. I can be a scary looking dude and have had to use that at least 3 times in the last year as someone experiencing mental issues went off on a quiet brown guy, a woman and some teens respectively.)

Which is pretty huge and mostly discretionary.

I do abstain from beef. Which is difficult as hell as I rock weights at the gym and beef is incredibly protein efficient. But it's the least I can do. So I eat a boatload of chickpeas and chicken.

My smartphone is a shitty ancieng refurbished one as that's the most ethical I could find.

I haven't bought sweatshop clothes in years. So yeah, my fashion sucks as it's mostly thrift shop but I dont feel evil. (Though, my boxers are falling apart and it's getting kind of desperate. Sadly, because other people don't give a shit there are very few ethical underwear options.) Similarly, every piece of non electric furniture in my place is second hand, except for my bed frame.

Gave up on cars more than a decade ago. Finally got a second hand one but bike, bus and train almost everywhere.

I've taken a 30 - 40% pay cut to work in the non profit sector. Which makes it unlikely I'll ever buy a house but my work helps put kids through school.

My individual decisions don't make a difference but it's like voting. If others lived similarly, the world would be significantly better. We can all do better, it's just harder than whining about billionaires online.

Almost everyone agrees there should be more compromises in politics. So I'm curious, how would that play out?

While I love the policy debates and the nuances, most people go for the big issues. So, according to the party platforms/my gut, here's what I'd put as the 3 for each party:

Democrats: Abortion rights, gun control, climate change.

Republicans: Immigration, culture war (say, critical race theory in schools or gender affirming care for minors) , trump gets to be president. (Sorry but it really seems like a cult of personality at this point.)

Anyway, here's the exercise: say the other side was willing to give up on all three of their issues but you had to give up on one of your side's. OR, you can have two of your side's but have to give up on the third.

Just curious to see how this plays out. (You are of course free to name other priorities you think better represent the parties but obviously if you write "making Joe Pesci day a national holiday" as a priority and give it up, that doesn't really count.)

Edit: The consensus seems to be a big no to compromise. Which, fair, I imagine those on the Right feel just as strongly about what they would call baby murdering and replacing American workers etc.

Just kind of sad to see it in action.

But thanks/congrats to those who did try and work through a compromise!

Having large numbers of people starve to death seems like a pretty damning indictment of a system. But I dunno, maybe I'm overly attached to food?

Listened to Billie Jean while cleaning, wondered what the all time playlist might be.

I imagine Kanye, Clapton, Pink Floyd, James Brown, Ike Turner all make the cut with MJ but I'm curious what Lemmy comes up with!

Kind of amazing. In my head this is basically saying "we can't protect people in parts of downtown Vancouver and rather than change that, it may just be easier to abandon the area.

So, what do we do now? Keep the lotto line, see if Lindholm can centre Mikheyev and someone (like Hoglander?) Keep Miller, Brock n Suter together and see what Petey/Lindholm/Mikheyev can do?

I'm just so excited.

Original Joe's at Cambie and Broadway used to be great for this.

Trying to think of a bar with a window view of a busy street on a hill...
