Genuine question as someone who thinks blockchains are neat but doesn't really think currency is the right application, how is that better? The bank is technically closed a lot, but I never really have trouble buying stuff or sending money around in the off hours using regular dollars.

Right, but as this article mentions, businesses have more issue with that since they have to wait on the banks to be open. And as for the individual, what about when a holiday falls on the day that you would get your check and you have to wait until the next business day, which can be up to three or four days away before you can get your paycheck? With so many people literally living paycheck to paycheck Something like that can be devastating.
