Im desperate to find out what "statements of a political nature" entails.

[-] thesporkeffect@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago

CNN reporters on the scene observed one of the flyers, which said “NYU is a mob front” and “had various allegations of wrongdoings against the school.”

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Press conference states that the flyers he threw around were a lot of conspiracy theory nonsense and that NY educational institutes are fronts for the mob.

[-] billiam0202@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I'm gonna guess a pro-Israel or pro-Palestine remark, and the guy chose a place he knew lots of press were gonna be.

(edit: Mediaite is reporting he was calling NYU a mob front and was throwing out flyers.)

The article doesn't make it clear- did he die, or was he extinguished quickly enough?

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 8 points 8 months ago

Press conference is saying he survived and is hospitalized.

[-] DocMcStuffin@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Hospitalized and in critical condition

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Why wouldn’t it be about Trump?

[-] Eldritch@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

He's an avatar for the mental illness they personally suffer with.

[-] billiam0202@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Well, right-wing protests tend to involve guns and not self-immolation, and it's not likely for anyone not-right wing to protest Trump finally facing some consequences for his crime, so a statement on the middle east seemed most probable to me.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Psychosis isn't limited to Trump. ;)

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Oh I know, I just mean why would someone assume Palestine is the issue when it’s outside of Trump’s trial? Hardly a key Trump issue. I assumed it was a protest in support of Trump until I saw your comment on this post

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Yeah, of all the things to set yourself on fire over "NYU is a front for the mob" is not the first thing I'd think of...

[-] Eccitaze@yiffit.net 2 points 8 months ago

Looks like it was mostly unrelated to Trump, he likely chose to do it outside the courthouse because there were more people and news cameras paying attention there.

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 22 points 8 months ago

Now imagine being a juror for this trial. It must be absolutely bonkers and nerve wracking.

[-] WhyDoYouPersist@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

Yes, your literal life is in the hands of media pundits and those in charge of court records, based on the recent news of the juror who was ousted by Fox.

Some of these jurors are going to have PTSD after all this is over.

For a moment I thought a Trump supporter had grown balls. Indoctrinated nutjob balls, but balls.

But after reading that Manifesto, it looks more like it's a classical conspiracy nutter who must, at any cost, trace all world events and pop culture back to a secret group that is orchestrating everything:

  • Secret group controls both major US political parties
  • Cryptocurrency intentionally built/pushed by this group to crash the global finance system
  • Secret group is mocking everyone by broadcasting their plans through i.e. old Simpsons episodes
  • 1970s dystopian movie classics were actually setting us up to accept these dystopias
  • Secret group knows about coming resource depletion and climate collapse, will destroy society, then rule the survivors.

TLDR; a wild mix of real issues, attributed to America-centric conspiracy puzzle pieces, many taken from Russian propaganda, combined with far-fetched associations that would make any numerologist proud.

Getting a lot of posts on this, I'm going to pin this one because a) breaking news and b) it has the most engagement.

Removing the others.

Bill Clinton was secretly on (former CIA Director) George H.W. Bush’s side, and that the Democrat vs. Republican division has been entirely manufactured ever since: Clinton is with Bush; Gore is with Bush; Trump is with Hillary, and so on. When they present themselves in public, they are acting as characters that are against one another, practicing kayfabe as wrestlers do.

Okay dude… and that’s honestly not even the craziest line. Maybe the Simpsons mob part was? That guy needs help

[-] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 9 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Oh my. Imma have to sit down with a blunt on this one and take it in. Lots to unpack.

[-] Eccitaze@yiffit.net 6 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

~~Oh, okay, he's a garden variety nutjob who went off his meds for too long. Glad it could be cleared up.~~

EDIT: I realized this was a bit flippant after thinking back on it. It's obviously tragic that this guy wasn't able to get the help he obviously needed before it was too late. I'm relieved it wasn't because of obvious partisan leanings (i.e. he was protesting the trial in one way or the other) and that it appears his decision to set fire there appears to have been more to draw attention to his message. I won't even say that his ideas are entirely wrong--it wouldn't surprise me in the least if billionaires were pumping crypto as a rugpull, but there's a lot of obvious delusions (like claiming that the Simpsons, the Beatles, George Orwell, and various pop icons were part of a conspiracy to normalize doom-and-gloom sentiment). I just hope this doesn't delay the trial too much, and I hope it's not a sign of things to come.

Videos of the situation posted on the social media platform X showed at least one person attempting to pat down the fire with a suit jacket, before another individual with a fire extinguisher put out the fire that way.

And people say us New Yorkers are rude…

[-] Ultragigagigantic@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

We need every person alive to fight the class war. Don't throw your life away. Spend your time fighting to enable as much change as we can.

One match won't cut it while we're standing outside in the rain, locked away from the controls of the nation we are forced to live in.

[-] Pistcow@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

That's a good start

Yes! I didn't even think of that

This is the best summary I could come up with:

NEW YORK – A person has self-immolated outside the Manhattan courthouse where former President Trump’s first criminal trial is ongoing, police confirmed to The Hill.

The incident, which occurred in a park outside the courthouse where protests of Trump’s trial have taken place this week, drew a heavy emergency response.

With 12 primary jurors and six alternates seated, the trial can move into opening remarks on Monday.

Several prospective jurors, who were ultimately excused, expressed anxiety about serving on the high-profile panel given the media attention it is expected to receive.

Before moving on, Trump’s lawyers will discuss his possible trial testimony at a hearing this afternoon, where the judge will decide which topics prosecutors can cross-examine the former president about if he takes the stand.

The topics span thirteen different court determinations involving Trump in other cases.Trump is accused of falsifying business records in connection with a hush money deal with an adult film actress made ahead of the 2016 election.
