Spoof comedies a la Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Top Secret

[-] Tandybaum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

We had a run of it with Scary Movies but we’re way overdue for more.

Agreed but the mentioned comedies weren’t so overtly sexual with the nature and visual gags of the jokes.

Spy thrillers were much common in the 80s and 90s, whereby there was intrigue and plot more than action. Perhaps it’s the end of the Cold War and the rise of mission impossible as the de facto spy movie.

The first Mission Impossible is a spy thriller and it is beautiful. Nothing against what came after it (mostly good spy action thrillers) but the first is a very different movie.

Also: The Hunt For Red October. Phenomenal movie.

Although (I hope) it's having a resurgence, whodunnits. Knives Out as a modern example, Clue, and Last of Sheila for some classics.

Love love love a good whodunnit. Feels like they’ve stalled a little bit I’m hoping we see more good ones.

Monster/giant monster movies. I really miss horror movies where the monster was a real monster, not some twist where the monster was actually a metaphor for loss. Also giant monsters destroying cities dont get enough love these days.

I genuinely loved 2014 Godzilla - to me, it was the right balance of building a believable undercurrent of discovery and not showing too much until it’s time. The airport scene - when a panicked terminal is running from a monster and explosions and then, boom - dwarfing all that enters a foot. Holding that shot, letting the scale sink in - really great.

I’m really hoping the next Cloverfield is a banger

I lost track of a ARG stuff “the old site” got shitty.

What are your favorite examples?

[-] ShoePaste@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly, mainly just classics. I grew upnon the 70s godzilla movies and that whole universe. Alien is one of my favorites. Cloverfield (original) was fun. But honestly there just hasnt been much in the last like 20 years.

I know there's already a cult following but I absolutely love found footage horror movies.

[-] Tandybaum@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Same!

The documentary The Found Footage Phenomenon is really good if you haven’t seen it.

[-] spaduf@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 year ago

Great doc. Also just saw that Grave Encounters is free on youtube right now for anybody looking for something to watch.

Yes! I love em too! REC, the VHS series, Hell House LLC, and of course Blair Witch!

I don't know if it counts as a genre but I love a good narrator character. Two examples that come to mind are Bert from Mary Poppins or the Merry Men from Robin Hood Men in Tights. When done well it adds such a nice charm to the story.

Mumble core! I think it’s hilarious and so good. Nobody knows about it though, but I get that it’s not for everybody.
