Could this be done on app level? It would be great to have a status / notifications about interesting posts or comments, mainly for new replies.

and added as a new category under “Saved” with a fallback option “Keep followed content as saved when interest period ends”.

Not until Lemmy devs add that. Pretty sure there is an open issue somewhere. Doing it in app would require polling which I am against in general to not hammer instances. Its not very neighborly. Same with notifications (which Lemmy devs are working on AFAIK!)
