IIRC, Blaze (mod here) got banned under similar circumstances.

Hello,

That's indeed why I opened this community in the first place. For people interested, you can have a look at this post for the details (open the spoiler): https://lemmy.world/post/11446250

A lot of them have been abandoned now.

Indeed, we should definitely consolidate

Lol, it feels strange being invited here as someone not a mod or instance admin, and my original intent was to just lurk silently.

That's the whole idea, all the people here are regular posters. They might be mods or admins too, but that doesn't really matter. We are here to talk about how it feels to post regularly, and it's something that only a few people really experience.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your comment, I wholeheartedly agree.

At first we wanted people to join, so we were more lenient. I guess it is now time to protect the space, and not be afraid to take sanctions for people who are straight up rude.

That's interesting, because I can exactly tell you why there are so many movies communities

  • !movies@lemmy.world got created but is pretty much unmanaged. People on LW just post there out of habit, or because they support LW
  • there was historically a moviesandtv on an instance called lemmy.film. It was getting some traction, but then the instance disappeared
  • to keep another instance out of LW, people (including me) got involved into !moviesandtv@lemm.ee. It was going well, but at some point I suggested to have discussion threads for current movies, and to engage more with the community. The mod found that "backseat moderating" and banned me. The details can be found in the spoilers in the OP here: https://lemmy.world/post/11446250?scrollToComments=true
  • I thus took over !movies@lemm.ee, to kind of have that space to discuss movies.

I think we might consider posting to !movies@lemmy.world to promote the two others on Lemm.ee. I actually did that 2 months ago to talk about the Dune discussion thread we had on !movies@lemm.ee: https://lemmy.world/post/12820343?scrollToComments=true

18 upvotes, no comments, and that's it. I guess a few people went there, but I'm not sure.

Definitely. I feel like every other week I stumble upon someone who doesn't know they can switch instances in literally 3 clicks.

Small post to ping a few people who might have interesting insight on the questions discussed in this community.

I am usually trying to encourage people to host communities on other instances (recently moved !casualconversation@lemmy.world to !casualconversation@lemm.ee, but sometimes it feels like fighting against the current.

What do you think?

Probably a very polarizing question.

On the one hand, having most of the users and communities on LW causes technical issues (see this post), and also gives the LW staff too much power over Lemmy as a whole.

On the other hand, with 18k MAU on LW out of 47k (https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy/), every community listed there has a much higher chance of visibility compared to an alternative hosted on another instance

History of LW controversial decisions

Question for you: how are we going to attract people to Lemmy communities such as this one if all we have to offer is communities with a few OC posts and nothing else? You need content to attract content, nobody (except I guess "repost bots" like me) likes to post to empty or inactive communities.

Lemmy has a content problem, we all would like to have only OC content here, but that's not going to happen magically.

This picture is a screenshot from Twitter, so it wasn't even "OC" when it was first posted on Reddit.

Finally, comments like you just demotivates people like me who try to keep this community and others active. Quoting the second rule of this community

2 Be respectful, especially when disagreeing. Everyone should feel welcome here.

The difference is up and down, not left and right
