For the past week, I've been building, tearing down, and rebuilding my shiny new (Not new) Dell 5820. I've gone from Windows server, to ubuntu, to Proxmox, to Debian 12 to openmediavault. I'm never fully happy, and seem to generally hit an issue or two (Mostly, because I come from a windows / ESXi background, and some of this is quite steep learning).

Anyway, I feel I've got one last rebuild in me before I settle, and I'm thinking: Procmox

  • LTX running PLEX
  • LTX running Jellyfin
  • VM running Debian --Debian VM running Docker and all the containers I need -VM running Windows10 for dedicated game servers -VM running Openmediavault for NAS bits

ORRRRRRR..... Install debian, and remove one layer of complexity, albeit loose the handy backup features.

My only concern with Proxmox is the greif of getting hardware transcoding working my Radeon Pro WX 4100 (Proc is a Xeon w2... something!!) for plex, which it would do directly if I were to go for Debian on bare metal.

Kinda looking for advice and direction!
