Downside? It's noisy and power hungry
Pretty big downside tbh and pretty meh Xeon CPU at this point (equal to a 7th gen i7).
But plus side is the space for HDD, memory is easy to get cheap (DDR3) and a solid case to build in a new build at worse.

Surprised no one posted this, the web and cyber threat look like that : https://livethreatmap.radware.com/
I wouldn't trust Synology on that aspect, better have an entry over VPN.
I do.. We still have users who have them in their office at work and an Addonic raid array from early 2000s... I need to check it next week lol.
I don't think I ever heard of Thecus.. are they still around? Website is online but I couldn't find any vendor with any model in stock.. pretty strange.
Worse NAS goes to Iomega StorCenter ix2.. Probably the worst device I ever worked with, Lenovo pulled the plug on the company in 2018, which existed since the 80s.
You could also run Xpenology on your custom NAS, which is a bootloader for Synology DSM os. Other alternative is TrueNAS, Unraid or OpenMediaVault (or any other I might not know).
QNAP nas are fine too, but I disliked the backdoor they had pre-2021.. Terramaster are terrible chinese knockoff though, hardware is ok but the OS need to be flashed.
Wow didn't notice how hard it is to get a platinum 500w power supply in 2023.. The only one being a Seasonic or Silverstone one for over 200$ (CAD).
Maybe these one?

(Last I checked EVGA branded PSU are Seasonic, been using those for a decade, no issues.)

Also a good brand.
P.S. You never mentioned the cost of your build. π
Hence, now that I have the chance I'd like to upgrade to something much more energy efficient, idleing at < 10w.
Unless you're going full (sata) SSD, that's impossible as most drives will idle at 4-7w and go up to 15w.
So 20-25w is not that bad, depending on the amount of drives.
I use the Draw.Io desktop app, not the web version for obvious reason.
Use to do it on Visio.. But well Microsoft destroyed it.
"Shucking" not "shrugging" π
Can I shrug it and use it internally without having to format it?
Not always has some use the external HDD interface sometime partition the data off by a few bytes, Western Digital is famous for that on the element series.
So I would recommend backing up data to another drive or if you can shuck it without being destructive in-case it doesn't work while shucked.
So TLDR 50/50 chance.
only for 1400$
I would say that's pretty costly actually for a single CPU board, my full build was 1200$ CAD in July.
Check this vendor on Ebay for board : https://www.ebay.ca/str/tugm4470
It's where I got my Supermicro H11DSi (mind you it's the late 2017 model but not much new in between 2017 and 2019), fast shipping, pretty good price and he has a mix of ready to go combo or just parts if you need to.
I lean more on the Epyc side for the CPUs over Xeon but both are good.
Well first, 1U Thermals and noise are terrible due to the need of smallers fan who don't move as much air, but it's probably fine with NUC hardware as they are pretty low power. I would go for 3u or 4u at the very least if I actually want to move them.
Although you could just mount them in their own case.
Aren't drive hibernating if you don't use them?
Anyway At worse it's 20$ per month if you pay .38 kW/h. π
Oh boy here we go for me :
I won't talk about everything else I need to do haha.
