Way to go, Smith!

The "right to preserve fertility" is kind of a weird and wrong reason here but the intention and the implementation are great so still good enough. Letting minors make decisions like that is crazy and stupid. I'd say the legal age of adulthood (18 in most countries) is not big enough nowadays for this particular kind of decisions but it's a completely different story.

Nothing can be considered a lie without proof which you guys most likely don't have.

I suppose it has to do with the widespread belief that admins of an instance can be prosecuted for illegal text and imagery posted by their users.

I highly disagree with that. Admins of commercial platforms technically have higher risks due to higher attention from the government and sometimes more legal restrictions (e. g. gatekeepers). Also the FOSS community is not necessarily known for compliance but rather the opposite. I believe it's more about the personalities of the admins and the nature of the community itself, especially since many of the social platforms in question are less serious of projects than enormous businesses which leads to the increased feel of freedom and confidence amongst the developers and admins (makes them feel like they can be themselves and do whatever they want).

Everything else seems like points I completely agree with.

I think it's because more cutting-edge options are not anywhere near as easy to set up and use.

Also visit flatpak.org for more information about how stable distros get around the old packages issue.

I think Windows 10 going EOL is a good opportunity for Linux. People know how objectively bad Windows 11 is and how intrusive Microsoft ads can be.

I'm all in for terminal games. GUI games are bloat.

No like seriously, I get that the admins work for free but FOSS is supposed to be about freedom and making products that everyone can benefit from yet still the bias is simply hilarious sometimes and concerning usually.

For the record, I'm talking about conflicts of different opinions here, not justifying hate speech or extremism. I know there is a major difference between FOSS and Big Data in terms of treatment of troll behavior (with the latter supporting it because it generates engagement), but it is clearly being misunderstood and abused now.

I even think I'd rather recommend proprietary options to others at this point because of mental health risks. Yes, I know that some major platforms are quite heavily biased politically (with X even being accused in supporting fascism) but it's not as bad as being biased in everything imo.

Can't we finally understand that the modern trends in most cultures praise exclusiveness (often cleverly disguised as distorted inclusiveness which sounds impossible but is actually a case and it hurts people's understanding of the latter) and work against it? Or at least we could do it for the FOSS reputation.

On the positive note though, Mastodon that is probably the biggest FOSS social platform seems to be pretty good (though probably a bit too close to the Big Data in terms of troll treatment). Could it be because of the size?

I think it's just nice to be able to verify a file with a right click instead of opening the terminal and typing the *sum command. Yes, it is technically bloat, but also good for time saving.

Debian is not a beginner distro. It requires some knowledge and advanced setup. Mint is the default for new users nowadays.

SteamOS for PC is long outdated and similar distros are made specifically for handheld hardware. Go for a general desktop or gaming distro instead.

I saw some Reddit posts claiming AMD being not optimized for Linux particularly for arch related distros (I use EndeavourOS)

This is literally the other way around.

But in general it depends on the budget. Both Intel and AMD work perfectly on Linux. It's more about the CPUs themselves. AMD is better in the budget category because of much more capable iGPUs and performance/price ratio but Intel is better in high end because of simply better technological advancement (as long as you can keep the chip cooler than 90°C).

But if it keeps working for a long time, like 6+ years, then I don't mind investing.

I wouldn't be so optimistic about modern laptops, especially ones with dedicated GPUs. They don't live for more than 2-3 years without repairs.

I HATED it. The other thing besides my IMMEDIATE hatred for it, was the fact that it didn't work. I couldn't get the internet, or sound, or bluetooth, or a lot of things working.

If Ubuntu doesn't work, nothing else will. It means your hardware is unsupported on Linux because of the manufacturer not caring enough to add the support.

And then it took roughly 30 minutes to boot. I googled it, and it should only take 15-20 minutes to install, and boot almost instantly.

I think it's because your PC has USB 2.0 ports which are like 20x slower than the newer ones. The guides are usually made for beefy new machines that only like 1.5% of people can realistically afford.

The hardware shouldn't be an issue. Especially since supposedly Zorin 17 only needs 1.5ghz, duel core, and I have 4 core 3.75ghz. Every spec they listed as needed for Zorin I easily have double.

There's much more to it. As I already mentioned, some certain hardware is not supported on Linux because of missing manufacturer drivers for it.

Also I'm very sorry for the amount of toxic behavior you see in the Linux community. Going to Lemmy will probably make it even worse. Unfortunately it's just how it is. It has some stuff to do with the demographics of the Linux community but that's another story.

What do you think about this? I'm personally against anything enabled by default, especially if it can cause slowdowns. However I understand the importance of backups so this change makes some sense.

Here we're talking about PCs that can't officially run Windows 11.

Idk much about emacs but some people love it and probably will find it useful. Also the app seems to require a self-hosted backend so don't check it out if you're poor.

Many features are still incomplete and barebones but I think it's good to have it installed, especially for those who share and post photos all the time.
