This quote is from 2008.. that's 15 years ago. Back then calling them aboriginals was a politically correct term. This "first nation"/"first Canadian" trend is incredibly recent and it still isn't widely accepted.

Of course, he'll complain. Your point is simply illogical. Zelensky is not some smooth brain moral expert wannabe on the internet. He is the president of a country that's at war. He has his country's best interests at heart, therefore he will do whatever will help his country. He needs the support of Israel, he needs the support of the US, he needs the support of the UK, he needs the support of the EU. They're the ones who stood by him in his country's darkest days and helped Ukraine have a fighting chance against the world's second most powerful military.

Why would he not return the favor when one of these countries gets invaded to improve relations? Why would he risk support for his own country by not doing so? By the same token, why would he be okay with other countries that are siding with the enemy country? He's going to have whatever stances helps Ukraine the most. In war you have to do whatever is necessary to weaken your enemy and strengthen yourself.

Why would he care? He's fighting a war and his own people are getting slaughtered. He needs to say whatever he needs to get the necessary support to win. Israel is a powerful country and his country needs their support.

The issue with this idea is that it doesn't reflect how stocks work. Think about it like this: Owning a stock is like owning a block of gold. The value of the gold can go up or down. One year the value of your gold block could double and another year it could half. However, the actual value of your gold won't be determined until you actually sell it. The tax your proposing isn't a tax on wealth, but rather a tax on exchange rates. Besides if the stocks aren't cashed then no harm is done. That money is being used and invested by the business.

I don't think the issue is with the things we tax. We have good tax policy on that. The issue is that the system is flawed because corporations keep lobbying for new loopholes. If you want to see billionaires and corporations pay their faire share then we have to go after these loopholes. There should absolutely zero reason why individuals like you and me pay more in taxes than corporations like Salesforce, Nike, and FedEx. I'm not even talking about percentages here, we literally pay a larger monetary amount than they do. Actually some of these corporations get rebates for their profits. These are the type of things we should go after. We have to dig through the tax code, find every loophole, and hound our politicians to close them... And oh, not open new ones.

[-] Gorilladrums@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

There are loopholes to help them out. For example, they could take out loans against their wealth, and do whatever they need that way. The money isn't taxed, and the terms of these loans are usually very favorable towards the billionaires since their connections go deep.

[-] Gorilladrums@sh.itjust.works 32 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That is actually the case. Billionaires aren't swimming in a room full of cash and they don't some some secret mega vault that holds $100 billion. Most of these guys are founders of very successful corporations, and so they naturally have a larger than average share. Bezos has most of his wealth in Amazon stocks, Zuckerberg in Meta, Musk in Tesla and SpaceX, Gates in Microsoft, and so on. Their wealth goes up and down depending on how well the company they're most tied to is doing. In the US and most other places, stocks aren't taxed until they're sold. Once a transaction happens, there will be a tax. Usually tax rates go up with profits and income, and there are deductions for losses (to a degree). It's an okay system, the issue is that it isn't being enforced. Our system is full of loopholes that these billionaires exploit to pay way less than they should. But billionaires not paying taxes are nothing compared to corporations not paying ANY taxes on billions in annual profits. That's what we should go after.

Hearing other perspectives doesn't make somebody an enlightened centrist, it makes them knowledgeable and more aware. There's nothing wrong with gathering perspective and context before judging something, that's what people should always do. It's a sign of wisdom, not ignorance. You would have to be mind numbingly ignorant to actually believe that being in echo chambers is a good thing.

What's dumber than these surveys which are always filled with loaded questions and questionable sampling methods, is the fact people take them as fact without even looking into them. I spent so much time trying to track down where the original survey is, and it doesn't exist. It's not on the Change Research website, it's not linked by any article that mentions it, and it's not reported by any credible outlet. It's reported on by 5 or so tabloids like The NY Post, The Daily Mail, and Teen Vogue and nothing more.

Funnily enough, out of all the delusional people under that thread, he probably has the most realistic job.

Imagine yourself as a normie. Someone who has never used Reddit, but has heard about it. You decide one day to create an account on there to try it out and see what the fuss is all about.

Right off the bat, you notice the shitty UI. It is laggy, cluttered, and annoying to use... but that's fine, it's popular for a reason, right? Anyway, you just had an avatar shoved down your throat and your ready to get started.

You go look through the subs and see what's going on. You see a few that you think are interesting and add them to your feed. Not even 10 seconds later, you get a message in your inbox:

"You've been automatically banned from r/vaginas because you subscribed to r/penises. We don't support misogyny here!"

You think to yourself "wow, that was weird". But whatever, you decide to move on.

After signing to a few subs, you start scrolling through your feed, and you see an interesting post on r/technology about a new phone that came out. You go into the comments hoping to see what the specs are and instead you see...

  1. People arguing about Republicans
  2. People comparing the phone company to Nazi Germany
  3. A few people downvoted into oblivion for no reason
  4. Incredibly shallow and unfunny humor
  5. Random mainstream pop culture references You close the post because you're not a masochist, and decide to move on.

You stumble upon an another interesting post, this time a discussion about a show that you like on the r/Netflix. You've seen a couple of episodes and decide to leave a comment with your opinions on it.

Huh, that's weird, you got a message in your box almost immediately. It's too fast to be a reply, so what could it be?

"Your post was automatically removed for not meeting the minimum karma threshold. No, we won't tell you what it is"

You think "okay, that's annoying, but I guess I'll just try a different sub".

You notice a fun sub where people share their shower thoughts, and some of the posts are funny. You decide to try it out yourself, because why not?

Uh oh, your inbox went off again. What now?

"Your post was removed because it is vaguely similar to this post from 2009."

Alright now, you're starting to get pissed off. But you're still giving this site the benefit of the doubt. You decide to give it one last chance.

You remembered that liked games, and so you go to the gaming sub to see what's going on. You see a post about GTA, and decide to read the comments when you notice some idiot with hundreds of upvotes saying that they should bring back Big Smoke from GTA III. You leave a little comment correcting them, and decide to leave it at that.

Shortly after, you decided to leave another comment... but you can't post the second comment for some reason. That's weird, your internet is fine. Did Reddit go down? You refresh the page, and there it is. The dreaded inbox notification.

"You've been permanently banned from r/gaming"

What? You didn't shit. So you try to ask the mods why they banned you... and you get this:

"You've been banned for rule Title 18 r/gaming Code § 81.4 C - bigotry"

Wtf? You didn't violate that rule. You ask what gives. The mods respond with this:

"You can't disagree with me on this sub, doing so is bigotry. No, I won't be lifting your ban. Don't ever contact us again. Go cry to your mommy loser"

Followed by

"You've been temporarily muted from this sub for 28 days, you won't be able to contact the moderators"

Apparently the idiot you tried to correct was a mod. Even so, this reaction is unwarranted. You think "wow, fuck that guy, what a douche", and decide to let it go... but you can't because not even an hour later, you get a new message in your inbox:

"You've been permanently banned from Reddit for harassment"

Bonus: You get a reply back from the idiot mod in the GTA post doubling down on Big Smoke being from GTA III. He wanted to get the last word

That's when you take a deep breath, close your laptop, calmly stand up, walk to the nearest window, and chuck your laptop out.

I mean this from the very bottom of my heart, fuck Reddit.
