The version of the war of 1812 taught in the states is odd. Mostly focuses on the battle of New Orleans. The USA started the war as an attempt to invade and annex the Canadian British colonies in the east, and the war went so poorly they ended up (successfully, but still) defending Louisiana. People from both countries (and various European nations when they want to needle us, but mostly the English) have been calling Canada the 51st state for decades, this is nothing new.
