That was a good read with some helpful tips, but they didn't have a conclusion at the end so they never answered their own question!

I'm all for getting into old school tech, I even like to browse neocities.org on occasion just for the hit of nostalgia for the old web rings. I never got into newsgroups though, and I'm wondering what reasons you might use that instead of something like Lemmy, Mastodon etc?

Apart from the piracy side, I know all about that already lol

So I want to build a home server to use as a media server, and to back up my photos etc.

I am also currently doing an online course, and happen to spend some time at work as well as at home working on it. I don't like using Google where I can help it, but I find google docs really useful. So I'm wondering if there's an open source application that works essentially the same, but I could run off my own server? It would have to be web-based as I use Windows at work and can't install new programs :/

edit: Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I've got quite a few leads to follow now, it should be fun!

yeah I knew a person who took heaps of benzos on a whim, then fucked up the next 10 years of their lives with a crippling addiction

"Someone could get the most votes, and not win!" McCarthy said at the time.. "So if you come in 3rd, you win. What? 'I got a lot of second votes, I got a lot of 3rd vote — what does that mean?'"

I don't think it's the "Black areas" that are getting confused about how it works. Or perhaps he's just pretending to not understand? 🤔🤔

I just stumbled across this while trying to learn a bit more about using the command line, and thought others might appreciate it. It comes in a printable format so you can stick it up on your wall :)

What it seems to me that you're suggesting is essentially crowd sourcing a mix of investigative journalism and data analysis, which is not a skill I think that just anybody can pick up and do properly. To be fair I've never tried my hand at investigative journalism, but I have done a few units of data analysis and trust me there's a hundred different ways to do it wrong. Even among the experts, there's a lot of disagreements to what the best approaches are. I had a teacher even say that if you give a set of data to 10 data analysts, you'll get back 12 different ways of interpreting it.

That is all to say that I'm not sure how much you'd be solving by providing another forum for people to post their takes on public policy issues, but then again if you manage to attract the right crowd of critical thinkers, who also happen to be open minded enough not to insert their own agendas into matters, perhaps people might hold each other accountable?

BTW have you checked that something similar doesn't already exist? Insert obligatory xkcd comic:

My guess to the biggest reason not to do this is safety - if somebody is being electrocuted, you want to be able to pull the cord out of the wall as quickly as possible to maximise their chance of survival.

Hi folks sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm fairly new to Usenet and although I have it all set up, I saw some instructions to use a docker to run SABnzbd in?

I've been using it for about a month without one, but I'm worried there might be adding security or privacy risk?

I just had a look at the main page, and saw a post with the line, "The lying cunts at shit Just Woke are trying to claim that we're Nazis because we fight against their far lefty woke ass shit about transgenderism and how it's used to groom and mutilate children", and another that says, "Reeeeeeee!! Don’t you understand that unless I read soft porn children’s novels to five year olds about the joys of anal sex, that trans kids will literally be genocided!!?! Reeeeee!!"

Yeah I'm comfortable with people not wanting to associate with an instance like that. You wanna be a part of it, go for it. Doesn't mean the rest of us need be exposed to that kind of ignorance, bigotry and hate.

I was skeptical of this claim so I went and had a look. Here's some of the posts I saw:

"Polar Ice Sheets are thicker than ever despite predictions that the Arctic and Antarctic would be ‘Ice free’"

"Leftist Parents “Flee” Florida Because Of New Laws Blocking Child Mutilation"

"It’s strange how you never see pedophiles, im sorry, drag queens reading to old people instead of kids"

So yeah some pretty insane takes there

I would like to see a breakdown of useage by region. For example I found stats that said India's share of linux users rose from 9% in May to 15% in July. That's quite a sharp increase in only 2 months! With a population of over 1 billion people, I'm betting this rise would have a significant increase in global stats, so I wonder what is behind it..

Wood is mostly cellulose and lignin, which holds no nutritional value to us humans. Another comment said that termites have certain enzymes which digest it, but it's actually the bacteria in their guts which break down the woody fibres so they can turn it into glucose. So, theoretically, maybe we could isolate those bacteria and somehow incorporate them into our guts too? I mean it probably wouldn't work, but you never know until you try right?

So one of the benefits of a streaming service is the recommendation algorithm suggesting new shows to you. They're not perfect but I have discovered great shows in the past because of it. So to replace that I've found a great app called JustWatch. It asks you to select what services you're subscribed to so I just choose all of them, then select what shows I've watched and which I liked, and its algorithm suggests new shows to watch. You can also use it to track what episodes you're up to, which I'm sure is great for people more organised and less ADHD than I am!

Disclaimer - I suspect this app is australian-centric, but there must be other apps out there for your country too.
