The most common world view is very critical of both of these ideologies. And i agree with them on this topic.

I usually only collapse comments when the thread inside them gets too long, and use the floating navigation bar to go to next comment

Yes, it is annoying. I recommend you to disable "Click to collapse comment", comments will then only collapse when you hold them.
