I didn't read the full report and can't tell if it's accurate but it makes more sense seeing countries with generally worse road conditions having more growth in the last years.

Because it's something you use a lot for small things throughout the day. When you need to quickly answer a message or look at a map you shouldn't need to stop and place down everything you're holding.
The good thing is GoPros are still good years later. Most of the action my GoPro 4 has seen was in the last 2-3 years after sitting for a really long time.
This is happening with non-luxury brands too. I was looking for a simple sports t-shirt lately and it's actually really hard to find one without a huge brand logo at the front. Do people actually like this?
