So what does he want to be called? Just a rat? But - there are actual rats, which are already called rats. Unless those don't exist in this universe, "ratman" seems like a pretty reasonable term. He has both rat and humanoid features.

You already kinda said it—this is a problem with the relationship with your boss, not with the book.

With my boss, I can just say, "Honestly, this one was a miss for me. I appreciate the recommendation, and I wanted to give it a chance, but I didn't find much actionable substance in it. What did you get out of it?"

If you don't feel like you can do that, have a conversation with him about how he likes to receive feedback. If the answer is "he doesn't," it might be time to go boss shopping. But I doubt that will be the case.

"MothBookkeeper is the dictator of the world, and I completely trust his decisions."

Nevermind the logistics of that; power lives where people believe it does.

Then I could make multiple beneficial changes, such as:

  • Heavily taxing the rich
  • Enacting drastic climate policy
  • Banning paper stickers that rip as you try to take them off
  • Sending Mitch McConnell on a rocket into the sun

This seems like a bit of a strawman argument. I haven't seen anyone say that explicitly—if they have, it certainly isn't common. I have seen people say they're willing to pay for a "higher quality app," and I can see how you could interpret the implication there being that FOSS apps are shitty in comparison. For me, though, I don't interpret it the same way, and I'd assume positive intent. Some people like Sync better than the other apps and are willing to pay for it. That's it, really.

I have no idea why so many people are upset about Sync. There are so many FOSS alternatives. Just... don't use it? It literally doesn't impact you at all.

Did you read the article? The guy almost killed himself from having to listen to comments like this one. Asshole. Keep it to yourself.

[-] MothBookkeeper@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago

I appreciate you honestly giving your opinion when it conflicts with the popular sentiment, and I don't think you should be downvoted for that.

But this is such a shit take, wtf.

Would we hunt them?

[-] MothBookkeeper@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

I disagree. The views during /r/place are negligible. Advertising Lemmy and stealing their users: priceless.

It pains me to agree, since the community put so much effort into these, and that's truly appreciated, but I don't feel like any of them live up to Voyager's aesthetic. They're all kinda amateurish. Hopefully the devs do another one of these contests in time.

I'm realizing this is basically the McDonald's fry container. Narrow on the bottom, but wide at the top, fanning the fries out so the maximum amount are displayed. Low cut top to show the fries' cleavage. The back is higher to support these fanned out fries. More of a stuffed envelope shape than a box, which takes up the same amount of space, visually, but fits fewer fries. The bottom is also rounded up to create the illusion of there being more room on the inside. Everything works together to deceive you.

To the new users (lemmy.world)

Welcome to Lemmy! Here's a simple guide for those migrating.

Lemmy is pretty much Reddit, with one major difference—it has instances. Imagine you could take all of Reddit's backend server code, copy and paste it, and host your own version of Reddit. Cool! Now you're an admin of Reddit 2. If the CEO of Reddit 1 ever does something mind-numbingly stupid, you and your users will be unaffected*. Reddit 1 and Reddit 2 are akin to Lemmy instances. Each instance has their own users and communities (subreddits).

Lemmy instances all work with each other*. Think of it like email. If I'm a Gmail user, I can still email Yahoo addresses, because Gmail, Yahoo, and all other email providers use a shared set of rules. All Lemmy instances also follow a shared set of rules (called a protocol, not that you need to know that). That means you can post to other instances, subscribe to their communities, upvote, downvote, and do all the things you can do on your instance.

The Lemmy app you use has a lot of control over how this is all laid out, so if you're finding it confusing, try different apps. As a former RIF user, I personally like Liftoff, which you can get in the Play Store, but other popular options are Jerboa, Thunder, Connect for Lemmy, wefwef, and Summit.

There's plenty more to say, but that should be enough to get started. Feel free to post questions in the comments! I may not know the answers to all of them, but I imagine others will.

*Oversimplification.

All the content, none of the Spez? Or, is it better if Lemmy stays distinct?
