Nothing wrong with the cover, but I'm sold on the screenshots

This is material for No Stupid Questions or Ask Lemmy communities, not a Showerthought

I might be daft, what's the point of these artificial people?

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 10 points 2 days ago

My thoughts exactly. All I can think of is that religious devotion requires giving away your brain??? It really is a bizarre illustration

So... They're gonna leave it there???

Edit: and they don't even know the species. It could be a new one for all we know

I know there's like a billion jellybean flavors but if the orange one you speak of is also orange fruit flavor, it ranks low on my list. Unlike licorice though, it's edible.

We are not talking about what the most realistic case scenario would be if something like royalties were implemented. Of course companies will find ways to screw their workers, for example, with speculative profit as part of payment etc etc. I'm with you in that yes that's what's most likely to happen if it were applied in our society in this day and age and in some countries it would go worse than in others. We get that.

The whole point of this comment thread was what isn't happening, therefore, which morals or ethical considerations one doesn't need to mind because of that. It's not that "this payment style would be better if implemented", rather, " if payment worked that way, pirating would be harmful to the workers"

People can die of drinking too much water, I see your point but I die on my hill

Arguable for all categories except yellow. Largely dependent on cultural background, perhaps most Americans agree with these but I have my reservations

Ok, just curious, I can think of other things that would make someone "successful" in the music world but I think talent would still be in my top 10 for sure. Not essential as I said, you don't need to check everything in the list.

What are your top 10s?

Can you explain it to me please? So far the only one that got me to chuckle was the athlete greyhound one.

It'll be my birthday soon and I've no idea what to do to celebrate with my family.

Usually we gather and go eat out or make a meal at home but I'm uninspired about any restaurants or cafes atm, and I've no idea what menu to suggest if the gathering happens at home.

So perhaps you guys can recommend either something that's fun to cook or easy or maybe a type of dish you enjoyed somewhere. Or maybe you have other suggestions, like going to the cinema- but there aren't any interesting movies on now.

First world problems I guess, any ideas?

The question sounds hyper stupid but hear me out.

We have an underwhelming volume of shit that relies on plastic. Plastic is cheap and versatile. If we replaced the vast majority of it, I presume costs for most products would creep up, and we would also shift our demand for natural resources (such as wood for paper ). Are there enough resources to sustainably replace our current volume of single use plastics? Or would we be sentencing all of our remaining forests to extinction if we did? Would products remain roughly equally affordable?

Let's imagine we replace, overnight, all single use plastic in this hypothetical scenario with an alternative. All parcels are now mailed in paper; waxed paper if you need humidity resistance. Styrofoam pebbles are now paper shreds and cardboard clusters. No more plastic film, anywhere. No more plastic bags, only paper. No more plastic wrapping for any cookies confectionery, etc; it's paper and thin boxes like those of cereals. Toothbrushes, pens, and a variety of miscellaneous items are now made of wood, cardboard, glass, metal, etc. The list goes on, but you get the idea.

Is this actually doable? Or is there another reason besides plastic companies not wanting to run out of business that we haven't done this already? Why are we still using so much fucking plastic?

I haven't. I'm not even sure I've seen one. I've definitely read about them, but I'm not sure I understand what they smell like or what they taste like and how is it possible that people can comfortably eat something that they agree it smells horrible. We're not talking stinky like cheese or salami, but actually unpleasant if I understand correctly.

So please, do share your experience! Thanks

I got a couple of these and I absolutely hate them. I no longer work there, these shirts have the company logo on, they're of a color I don't like, the fit is awful.

I suppose I could donate them to charity, but I've never seen work uniforms donated or for sale at second hand shops. (I'm in Australia if that helps)

I'm also not into sewing or crafting with clothes, and I don't need any rags. I would keep them as shirts to use to do dirty jobs like cleaning or coloring my hair but I really feel awful wearing these, and I already have plenty of tattered shirts for that purpose.

Throwing them away just feels so wasteful. So I'm wondering if any of you have any ideas.

I just want a free minimalist app on my phone that lets me enter a date on one column, and a bunch of other values in other columns. I don't even need it to perform math, but I won't mind if it does. Bonus points if I can export the data, but not a deal breaker. I don't need any sync.

I could be using Google Sheets but fuck Google and also I want to keep my data local and private on my phone.

Thanks

Article is a couple months old but I was unaware of tarpits in existence against AI.

I've been searching for a VFX/3D art job for a very long time. Most positions don't mention Linux as a requirement and when they do, it's just a familiarity or basic competency implied.

Lately I've been seeing a few that require * proficiency*. There is nothing else in the job description that would lead me to think the position requires coding/programming skills. Of course one would be troubleshooting proprietary software issues on linux, but in my understanding that would be relying more on proficiency in said software than in the OS.

I might be wrong though.

I've used Linux before but I wouldn't call myself "proficient". What would that be, in your opinion, and could you recommend any resources (perhaps tutorials) in particular?

TIA

Other than it's sold in much smaller bottles that is. Is it chemically different? I'm not talking about the primers, I'm talking about the color paints.

In the same vein, are oil paints for miniatures different from classic oil paints? I find it hard to believe one would be using the same type of paint. Oils (as those sold for canvas painting) take ages to dry, especially if on plastic. They mix up too easily and I would predict a mess if you had to paint something that needs a lot of handling, such as a miniature.

Most miniature painting guides online focus on techniques but gloss over materials specifications. As someone with a fair amount of experience in traditional painting, I find this frustrating.

As the title says. I've been listening to some synth, some alternative rock, some electronica. But I find a lot of the music I usually listen to doesn't sound that great in my car. And I also find I'm more open to different music genres while driving.

I'm curious to know what you're into, if you want to share artists then the more the better.

Same wifi network. On my laptop I can access the website, no issues without VPN. On my phone, there's just no way unless I activate my VPN.

I tried searching about it but the closest results I found say it's an ISP issue, some apparently block the Archive. If that was the case then I'd need VPN for both devices, right? So it's got to be another reason, yes?

I didn't find anyone saying they experience the same as I am, I suppose because I suck at searching I guess.

Since they don't technically fry... Or do they? They're basically mini electric ovens. What's the difference between an air fryer and an electric oven, other than size and energy consumption?

Disclaimer: I'm not American, I don't live in the US

JD Vance didn't exist in my life before he became vice president. Now, I am aware that I also don't know anything about most vicepresidents in the world. But I've seen a lot of people who are also USA outsiders making comments about him as if implying something else, as if relying on facts everyone ought to know. I get the feeling most people have already heard about him from before and I'm late to the party.

So, what do I need to know, other than his political affiliations? Yes, we all know who the president is and that says a lot, but, is Vance notorious for anything else?
