It would be naive to think we aren't conducting large-scale espionage against China. We absolutely are, and against every other country on Earth. And so is every other country, to whatever limits they can.

However, in the name of diplomacy, we (all) pretend that we're upstanding, trustworthy people. That we can be trusted to further each other's goals and good fortunes. And sometimes our goals are even aligned, and a partnership really does benefit everyone involved. But it's all an act.

It's still a bad move on his part, and makes him look bad, but it's not revealing anything we didn't already know.

Most people draw a distinction between a phone/tablet vs a desktop/laptop. It's not a distinction that can be easily defined, but most people instinctively categorize them as such.

But regardless, the issue at hand has nothing to do with that definition. The discovery process requires them to process any applicable devices that might have info, potentially including all of the above (and more). His team said they already did his phone, but that the laptop in question is not used by him. His opponents say that he has not complied with the requirements of discovery.

The judge will rule on whether that laptop is included in the discovery order.

It's a case of a little information being dangerous, poor education, and a massive case of Dunning-Kruger.

Fluoride, at much higher levels than found in drinking water, has some nasty effects on the human body. As the saying goes, the dose makes the poison. But people will hear about that, and think that smaller concentrations just mean that the effect is smaller/slower. A lot of people also want to believe in all sorts of insane conspiracies, so this fits in perfectly.

If it wasn't fluoride in the water, it would be (and often is, anyway) some other stupid idea. Like vaccines and autism.

Call his fucking bluff. The only way anything would close is if it isn't profitable (enough). And if they can't turn a profit, well then they need to be better at business! (/s).

I get the concern, but the standard emulsifier in mayo is egg yolk. Something tells me they aren't trying to get rid of eggs.

Cooking and (basic) sewing. These are basic life skills needed for any level of independent living, yet so many are proud to be utterly incapable of either.

The change is regarding "permanent" installations, which the article also infers to mean directly hardwired. Those of us who go the route of a NEMA 14-50 outlet are likely unaffected.

That said, I wish they'd ban the cheap, shitty outlets that can't actually provide continuous power. These are the very popular $10 outlets, vs the $50 ones that also can't fit in a standard box.

They need to be "active", and "paid as agreed", which doesn't mean a whole lot. You are perfectly fine to get a pack of gum each month, and pay the balance in full. Or put a monthly bill on your CC, or just use it for gas. Just so there's activity each month.

Obviously avoid any that have a fee, and pay it in full each month.

Contempt of Court is a bit different. It's usually applied until the problem action is corrected. For instance, they could (in theory) hold the administration in contempt, meaning fines or even jail, until they comply with the court order to return him.

Now, they can and absolutely should be prosecuted for their actions, but it would likely need to be a separate case.

The hardest part to believe is that he would wipe his own ass.

I'm looking to upgrade some of my internal systems to 10 gigabit, and seeing some patchy/conflicting/outdated info. Does anyone have any experience with local fiber? This would be entirely isolated to within my LAN, to enable faster access to my fileserver.

Current existing hardware:

  • MikroTik CSS326-24G-2S+RM, featuring 2 SFP+ ports capable of 10GbE
  • File server with a consumer-grade desktop PC motherboard. I have multiple options for this one going forward, but all will have at least 1 open PCIe x4+ slot
  • This file server already has an LSI SAS x8 card connected to an external DAS
  • Additional consumer-grade desktop PC, also featuring an open PCIe x4 slot.
  • Physical access to run a fiber cable through the ceiling/walls

My primary goal is to have these connected as fast as possible to each other, while also allowing access to the rest of the LAN. I'm reluctant to use Cat6a (which is what these are currently using) due to reports of excessive heat and instability from the SFP+ modules.

As such, I'm willing to run some fiber cables. Here is my current plan, mostly sourced from FS:

  • 2x Supermicro AOC-STGN-i2S / AOC-STGN-i1S (sourced from eBay)
  • 2x Intel E10GSFPSR Compatible 10GBASE-SR SFP+ 850nm 300m DOM Duplex LC/UPC MMF Optical Transceiver Module (FS P/N: SFP-10GSR-85 for the NIC side)
  • 2x Ubiquiti UF-MM-10G Compatible 10GBASE-SR SFP+ 850nm 300m DOM Duplex LC/UPC MMF Optical Transceiver Module (FS P/N: SFP-10GSR-85, for the switch side)
  • 2x 15m (49ft) Fiber Patch Cable, LC UPC to LC UPC, Duplex, 2 Fibers, Multimode (OM4), Riser (OFNR), 2.0mm, Tight-Buffered, Aqua (FS P/N: OM4LCDX)

I know the cards are x8, but it seems that's only needed to max out both ports. I will only be using one port on each card.

Are fiber keystone jacks/couplers (FS P/N: KJ-OM4LCDX) a bad idea?

Am I missing something completely? Are these even compatible with each other? I chose Ubiquti for the switch SFP+ since Mikrotik doesn't vendor-lock, AFAICT.
