Sounds like you're describing dissociation. I'd talk to a therapist if possible. It might be triggered by trauma or other condition as someone else mentioned.

I don't think this is the first evidence of a gesture for non-primate animals. Cats have a subtle gesture, where if 2 cats are hunting the same prey, one will look away, telling the other "go ahead" in a way.

The story works better with candy imo. She was testing him (or training him) to see if he could open the bottle, and was rewarded with candy.
