iirc the no windows 9 thing was actually because a lot of software ran a compatibility check like:
if windows version = “windows 9*” then open legacy mode
This worked for software written for newer windows like xp but still allowing a legacy mode on older windows versions like 95 and 98. Problem was this also put that same software running on windows 9 into legacy mode. So they called it windows 10 to sidestep the compatibility issues.
You know what, this is on us. Chat GPT is just a prediction engine that tries to say what words it thinks follow a preceding prompt, and it’s looked at millions of examples (written by us) and it’s seen hapless clients and users complain about bugs and be told: “user error, works fine” so often chatGPT just thinks it’s just the culturally accepted polite response to a bug report, in the same way as responding to “thank you” with “you’re welcome”. This is a dark mirror on our profession.

I don’t get it. From what I can remember from history classes and reading Wikipedia (so not ideal sources!) the victims of the holocaust numbered some c.6million Jews out of the c.14m total victims including, amongst others, c.7.8m soviet pows and civilians.
Surely what Germany should have guilt for is its genocide against humans, not specifically just its treatment of Jews. So unless we’re saying the treatment of communist, Slavic, Romani, gay and disabled people etc by nazi Germany was not such a bad thing actually and it’s just the Jews that Germany regrets killing (and surely we are not saying that!?) then it would seem to me that Germany should be speaking out against any and all genocide, including that of Palestinians?

At this point, for the needless cruelty to make sense to me, it has to be a sex thing. They have to be getting off on it. It doesn’t make sense otherwise.
I get that under capitalism a underclass of people living truly miserable destitute lives has to exist to scare the working class into accepting worse conditions. As all those worse conditions have to be is just good enough to keep the worker out of the underclass to be attractive.
But creating a system where these people have to exist as a societal tool for discipline and then calling the people forced by the system into this misery as taking a ‘lifestyle choice’ as an excuse to take away what little shelter they have is beyond cruel.
In this industry the “means of production” = “hosting and distribution platform and servers”. If you’ve got no way of hosting your content and putting it in front of people, your content may as well not exist. In much the same way an actor needs a theatre.
So as per any capitalist industry, those that own the means of production (I.e. google with YouTube) exploit its workers (content creators) to generate profit in the same way a steel mill owner gets to keep the profits from his steel mill despite the fact that the owner never creates any steel ingots themselves.
Is this really better than proper Linux in any way? Other than native play store, which means you can run shitty phone apps stretched fullscreen. Not sure I see the benefit.

Totally agree. IRC and Mailing lists used to be the best option for platform agnostic open source communities, but when better options exist it’s now used out of stubbornness. Even if not intentional, use of these systems with their own cliques and etiquettes now acts mostly as gatekeeping through obscurity and are off putting to outsiders who may well be prevented from participating.
