Snowy has the right idea in this picture.
It’s from the movie Snatch. Banger of a classic!
Good question. It’s been a while since I asked someone so forgive me if my memory is a little off, but if I recall the reasoning is that when sushi became big in the Edo era it was eaten by hand because it would fall apart easier. But times change and as techniques got better and you could eat it with chopsticks, that became the more ‘proper’ thing to do. Keep in mind that in izakaya (like a Japanese pub) people will even eat French fries with chopsticks - it’s just the thing to do (again, unless it’s super informal with friends and people are starting to get tipsy and then they may start snacking by hand bc they just can’t be bothered lol).
So I guess the reasoning is that the super high class joints pride themselves on their heritage and the “way it used to be done“ rather than worrying about modern sensibilities.
All that said, the best advice is watch what people around you are doing in a situation and follow their lead. That’ll usually keep you in pretty good graces. :)
Nothing is true.
Everything is permitted.
I watched this movie for the first time last year and it’s shocking how relevant it still is. Aside from the fashions, you could have told me it was made last year and I’d believe you.
There was a Voyager episode that documented this in detail.
As someone who lives in Japan, that is true as long as you stay inside the tourist bubble. Once you start venturing into places not meant for visitors, the difficulty goes from 0 to 100 real quick. That said, sometimes those experiences of struggling communication can be among the best you’ll have here.
the fact that the camera crew seemed to like focusing on them being intimate makes my brain say, "this must be important to 23rd century humans in some way".
Might I also suggest that another possibility is that until very recently, there has been so little gay representation on TV that merely depicting it at all, as Discovery has done, can feel jarring to some.
A friend of mine was complaining about the same thing back on Season 1, but I asked him if it had been a hetero couple shown brushing their teeth together or having a smooch would he have minded and he admitted probably not. We chalked it up to just not being used to seeing that with a gay couple on tv.
Just a thought.
What a horrible day to have sight.
And you are are making us all happy by sharing Trek memes, and that will eventually make it back to you. Steady as she goes, Ensign! 🚀❤️
Jesus… it is time to seriously re-evaluate and pare back the extensions I use. Ugh.
Same. I’m fucking furious. I specifically chose it over something like Readwise in order to stay open source. Ugh.
