loch ness monster (files.catbox.moe)

my first amigurumi with color switching! there are a lot of small mistakes on this one, but i think the overall quality is an improvement over my previous amigurumi.

maybe its because the shape is more complex than i've tried before, but it baffles me that i made this with my hands from nothing but yarn, stuffing, and safety eyes.

ok the title is a little bit of a lie, i made a tiny jellyfish before this but the that was like 10 tiny rows so it doesn't count.

i love this guy! i learned a lot about how to improve my technique while making him, and i'm just really stoked with how he ended up. his eyes are a little wonky and the tension in the tentacles is all over the place, but i can write that off as personality lol. i was also pleasantly surprised with how the variegated yarn looks in a finished piece.

howdy gang, i keep seeing this community in the trending communities thing and it being empty was annoying me, so here's my super cool and awesome post. first btw.

i remember reading (and identifying with) relatively often on reddit how lots of ace people tended to flip-flop between feeling extremely aroace and feeling like they desperately want a partner of some kind, and i want to talk about it.

generally, i am fine most of the time - feeling like i'm living the way i want to live (with no partner) and that i'm not lacking anything in that regard. most of the time i feel like being on my own suits me and perfectly aligns with everything about my general being. very infrequently i get an intense desire to find a partner and share my life with someone in some capacity, but those are momentary and maybe last a day at the longest. i know i don't actually want that for the long run and i'm perfectly happy on my own, but man sometimes those feelings are intense and confusing. kinda like i want the idea of a romantic lifelong relationship in that moment, but the details of how those things work and what they look like in reality are completely unappealing to me.

at some point, those intermittent feelings died down nearly completely and i want to attribute it to connecting more with friends and family, but i'm not a doctor so idk. i think if you feel this way and you know for sure you don't actually want a partner, it might be coming from a lack of meaningful connection with friends/family. at least, that is how i see my unique situation. maybe that's obvious (or wrong), idk i mostly just wanted to populate this community with something and maybe even get some discussion going.

anyway sorry about the blogpost, i guess i want to ask if anyone else here feels like some days they are mega aroace and other days the complete opposite? and do you find anything in particular helps you with it?

when i boot my computer after having run an update, my primary monitor (which should be at 1920x1080) is stuck at 640x480. interestingly, when i reboot and change nothing, it fixes itself until i run another update.

i'm on arch, using nvidia 555.58-2, on plasma 6.1.1-1. the monitor in question is DP-0 in the system info below.

what could be causing this and how can i fix it?

i've been having this issue for a while while kinda just dealing with it because it was something i could easily work around by booting my computer twice, but i'd really like to get it solved.

i just learned how to crochet and made these lil guys because the plastic/vinyl/whatever stuff on them was cracking and falling off. they're held taut by a drawstring which i just noticed is perfectly hidden by the angle of this picture, but i just used some extra yarn and tied it like shoelaces.

really simple and easy as a first project! i'm not sure if it is visible in the picture but i made the blue one second and i think it came out much better.

i got the idea from this video and used it as a general reference.

i just listened to grush (slapper btw, thank you @die4ever for posting it) and it made me think of another mike paradinas album i hadn't listened to in a while

fun fact when i first listened to this i did not connect the dots that "mike & rich" are in fact two of the greatest to ever do it, thought it was just some guys lol

also i love this album cover so much

yeah the hardest part of being vegan is interacting with non vegans. gotta love how the default response to veganism (you know that thing we do to try to better the planet and animal rights and shit) is to argue as if doing something about the issues you care about is a negative trait.

mfs always got something to say and love attacking a thing that as far as i'm aware is proven to be better for personal health, the environment, your wallet, and animals.

this is the correct response.

get it in writing that they accept the risk that comes with not upgrading so it can't come back on you. all you can do is CYA and make recommendations - if management does not agree with your recommendations make sure you have it documented that you informed whoever is making the decision of the risk.

if you think your employer will somehow still try to hold you accountable for this, save the aforementioned correspondence using something your employer does not manage i.e. a personal device. you could also let other people than this specific individual know about this so it isn't just your word vs his.

i wouldn't trust a company who would enable this by default to allow users to TRULY completely disable it. much like how you can only opt out of the telemetry options they allow you to.

hi all,

i've been getting some comments that my mic is quiet so before i go looking for a new one, i thought i'd check to see if this could be solved with software. i don't have an amp or anything for my mic and to my knowledge it shouldn't need one, but it is pretty old now and i forgot what actual product it is.

i'm on arch using kde with pipewire. i am already using kde's (or maybe something else does this idk) feature to raise maximum volume to 150% in the audio volume window, but this will turn itself off at unpredictable intervals and is also seemingly not always enough.

so i ask - is it possible to set some setting or use some linux audio magic to raise my mic output volume? and in the same vein of changing/setting audio levels, is it possible to configure the volume level on my system to not go above a certain level - as in all audio above x level is clamped back down to x?

full transparency edit - not 10 minutes after hitting the post button i found the volume knob on my mic that i swear to god was hiding so well and was definitely not just right there the whole time and definitely not accidently turned way down. still would like an answer to the second question though lmao

hi, is there anyone else here who is disappointed with the speedrunning tools available for linux users?

i've tried livesplit through wine but i can't get global hotkeys or autosplitters working, and speedrunning in general doesn't allow for the leeway required to tab out, split, and tab back in. i did give this a shot but it seems like livesplit server is deprecated and the project never got any more work done. also tried livesplit one, but again i couldn't figure out global hotkeys or auto splitting.

i used to use a tool called flitter but i would really prefer something more configurable like livesplit.

ok actually midway through writing this and looking for links to the things i've used in the past, i found this tool that does support global hotkeys. autosplitter would be nice, but it's better than the rest.

i'll still post this though - i'm curious if there are any tools/tips/tricks/etc others have to share.

been battling impostor syndrome for my whole career, and today i learned that one of the new (not new to the field) people on my team doesn't know how to use excel, the thing i spend like 50% of my working hours using.

worrying for my team and maybe the industry, but very comforting personally lol

you can't honestly be saying that there are no issues with hosting documentation/support for a project exclusively on discord as opposed to a classic forum or wiki.

even ignoring the issues that you are dismissing (and would not exist on a better suited platform), the people using the discord server do not own it. discord servers have no backup functionality. what happens when an admin goes rogue or gets hacked etc? what happens when people get tired of discord for the next chat app?

you shouldn't have to use a burner email to download a videogame mod or view documentation for an open source project.

not so much that they like to be used by companies, but that they don't care enough to change or learn how to stop it. for most people, the idea of giving up their favorite online service because of ads or whatever other predatory anti consumer shit it implements is a little extreme.

as long as it works, the vast majority of people who are not tech-literate will just use it regardless.

it's important to mention wherever that incorrect point is brought up:

the only reason people say there are no viruses on linux (which is wrong from the get go) is because there just isn't enough market share for lots of malware to be written and distributed with a linux target in mind. it is out there and it is a risk, just much rarer than windows malware. if more people start using linux, user-targeted linux malware in the wild will likely become just as common (and effective) as the stuff targeting windows.

never assume your system is safe by default and requires no hardening or awareness from the user/org.

decided someone needed to start sprouting some pikmin in here. i'm almost finished with it (i think) and as a long time fan of the series, this one has really got me hooked. i was so worried from the trailers that the new stuff like oatchi and the dandori battles wouldn't flow right or that the new aiming/lockon system would mess the game up, but it all works amazingly. there is so much less fiddling around with your pikmin and making sure everyone is in the right places and more just doing stuff. it rocks.

pikmin 4 area spoilersi just got to the 6th area and i am blown away by just how much is in this game! my jaw dropped when i saw there was a 5th full area, and i actually said "no way" out loud when they revealed the 6th area. AND this area addressed my issue of not all the pikmin types being useful! it just feels like this game is ready to burst with content between the numerous areas, caves, replayable dandori things, night missions, and the olimar mission which i haven't played yet.

my main gripe i have so far is the tried and true classic pikmin critique: the game suffers from being too easy in most areas. hopefully someone puts out a difficulty mod that isn't on kaizo levels at some point.

i also wish the caves were a little more complex, but the huge overworld areas make up for it with some of what i would call the best level design in the series.

what do you guys think of the new game? what's your favorite pikmin in it? favorite area? cave?
