Is this a reference to something new somewhere I’m not aware of?

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Totally. I was just steaming over three other threads with the top comment being typical Lemmy doomer BS.

I understand why it didn’t come across as a “yes, and” comment. I just find little to no value to commenting/replying to trolls where my reply probably would have made more immediate sense. I’d rather talk to you…

But if we surrender in advance things will be better for us…🤪

In Voyager if I search for a country name I can apply that search term to Posts, Comments, Communities, or Users. If for example I choose Communities it will show me communities across instances.

I don’t know of a way to address your second scenario,

But the third one you can get to in Voyager by pressing and holding on the community name or from the “…” button

Wasn’t sure if it was that or a joke that was just going a bit over my head 😂

Moved from the US to the Netherlands, it's been great.

Upsides:

Downsides: Decidedly less pay (compared to American amounts, but pretty good by Dutch standards)

With all those upsides it’s hard to imagine it not being great…

Ok but then my double entendre wouldn’t work…¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You’re dragging it wrong

Sometimes marketed as AirFry microwave combos, do this things actually work as both appliances or they really just microwaves?

The best examples that come to mind are when ordering food. As examples:

• You speak English and Spanish and are ordering a burrito
• You speak Thai and English and are ordering Tom Yum

I imagine it could depend on numerous things:
• You primary language or ethnicity
• What sort of restaurant
• Who you’re dining with
• Who you’re ordering from
• and probably a lot more…

At least a dozen people were killed and several others were missing in central Vietnam, where 2 million were without power. Bualoi’s deadly path had started with 10 deaths in the Philippines.

Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges wrote on X, "July 1935 German generals were called to a surprise assembly in Berlin and informed that their previous oath to the Weimar constitution was void and that they would be required to swear a personal oath to the Führer. Most generals took the new oath to keep their positions."

Hegseth reposted it with his own commentary, "Cool story, General."

That was fast

Ok - I acknowledge this is super nitpicky, and I didn’t even knew I cared until it caught me off guard every time I’ve encountered it, but I think your buttons are backwards in the dialogue for choosing a custom response when reporting a post.

Per Apple’s HIG:

Place buttons where people expect. In general, place the button people are most likely to choose on the trailing side in a row of buttons or at the top in a stack of buttons. Always place the default button on the trailing side of a row or at the top of a stack. Cancel buttons are typically on the leading side of a row or at the bottom of a stack.

I don’t follow British politics; all I know is typically what I gather from headlines that pass through my feed.

I was under the impression that the government did not support Palestine as they were arresting folks who spoke out in defense of Palestine and against the genocide.

Now I’m seeing headlines saying Britain (amongst others) are set to recognize Palestine statehood.

So what’s really going on?

Feb. 4 1939

BERLIN, Feb. 3.—Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels today ended the professional careers of five "Aryan" actors and cabaret announcers by expelling them from the Reich's Chamber of Culture on the grounds that “in their public appearances they displayed a lack of any positive attitude toward National Socialism and therewith caused grave annoyance in public and especially to party comrades.” The five include perhaps the best known German stage comedians who survived previous Chamber of Culture purges and still dared to indulge in political witticisms—namely, Werner Finck, Peter Sachse and “The Three Rulands,” represented by Helmuth Buth, Wilhelm Meissner and Manfred Dlugi. Their expulsion means that they are henceforth forbidden to appear before the public in Germany.

Besides motivating this action in an official communiqué, Dr. Goebbels also publishes a long article in the Voelkischer Beobachter in which he denounces them as “brazen, impertinent, arrogant and tactless" and generally imitators and successors to Jews. Simultaneously he denounces the "society rabble that followed them with thundering applause—parasitic scum, inhabiting our luxury streets, that seems to have only the task of proving with how little brains people can get along and even acquire money and prominence."

As regards the details of the "crimes" of which the five are accused, Dr. Goebbels mentions that they made political witticisms about the colonial problem, the Four-Year Plan and Chancellor Hitler's monumental building program and one of them even raised the question of whether there was any humor left in Germany today.

What amused the public most, however, and presumably roiled the National Socialist authorities most—although Dr. Goebbels does not mention it—is that they deftly, but unmistakably, caricatured some gestures, poses and physical characteristics of National Socialist leaders—sometimes with bon mots that made the rounds of the country. Dr. Goebbels says that the National Socialists proved during their struggle for power that they had a keen sense of humor that could kill opponents with ridicule. But as National Socialism proposes to remain in power 2,000 years it has neither the time nor the patience to apply that method to the "miserable literati.”

If the anti-German press of Paris, London and New York, Dr. Goebbels says, or the democratic governments in Western Europe, should now again complain about the lack of freedom of opinion in Germany it does not matter, “for after all during the last year the Fuehrer reconquered 10,000,000 Germans for the Reich."

It was one of the tools that allowed me to maintain healthy credit card usage habits. In my idle time when messing around on my phone I’d gotten into the habit of just transferring money from my checking account to my credit card, often in excess of my actual balance, so as to cover “pending” purchases.

Not only will my bank no longer let me do that, just to twist the knife a bit, they will let me make multiple payments totaling the pending total due so long as no individual payment exceeds my actual balance.

So it’s not that they can no longer handle negative balances on the card, it’s just that they’ve half-ass made the interface disallow it.
