Are there any academic focused lemmy instances? I'd love a community that requires proof of a degree to join (could still allow users from other instances to comment and participate) and only has science focused communities.
They're not as good, but also like pizza, even bad ramen still tastes good.
Yes, because it's illegal. If you're going to be the biggest host you're a bigger target which means you need to be more careful. What's good about the fediverse is that you have distributed instances so smaller ones can support things like piracy, and if a small one gets taken down there will be others in its place. The same game of whack a mole is what has allowed torrent tracker sites to exist. If there was one centralized torrent tracker site it would get shut down.
What the post says is exactly right. You'd be an idiot to have one account for your normal usage and piracy usage. In your normal usage you'll inevitably leak personally identifiable information. Having multiple accounts and multiple instances is the exactly right thing to do to keep piracy alive.
It's because it's the time period when the capitalists found the sweet spot of giving people a good enough life to not revolt, but not good enough to let them get ahead.
Well that was a wild ride. I can say I did not see that coming.
Text is basically free to host, especially text that you can index on a primary key like an account id. The only reason to do this is to reduce dev maintenance costs, but they're not achieving that by cutting back on the storage time
Why do we need fridges if we can just put things in the landfill and have it last longer
It feels like he's desperately trying to be whimsical but is awkward and unnatural at it so his performance feels super fake. If you're going to make a Wonka movie then Wonka's performance matters more than anything else.
This is a prequel so it's a new side of the story. My bigger problem with this is that it just looks really bad. The performance falls really flat and feels desperate to invoke whimsy, but it's failing badly at it.
It was like the dictionary definition of designed by committee.
The fediverse is definitely not perfect, but centralized monopoly social networks are extremely far from perfect too. In comparison, with all the growing pains it still might be better than the alternative
The people that need the most help have the least capacity to help others. You should also get close to people with the strength to help others too. Having to be there for everyone will become exhausting, but not everyone is like that, you need a balance.
Also, could it be that you're not reaching out enough to ask for help?
