It was being auctioned for the victims but there was also the real risk that a supporter would win who would let him he continue on business as usual. So definitely money well spent.

One thing the headlines aren't mentioning is that the families actually even helped fund a portion of the Onion's bid.

In order to make the bid work, a lawyer representing the families told CNN that the families “agreed to forgo a portion of their recovery to increase the overall value of the Onion’s bid, enabling its success”.

I live in Texas and when my partner changed addresses for his voter registration, it took like 2 fucking months. It was wild. He was just about to send a new one in when we got the confirmation card in the mail finally.

I early voted yesterday and the poll worker nearly clicked that I did not have a sufficient photo ID because I was using my passport. Thankfully another poll worker intercepted right before she did because who knows what the fuck happens in the system when that button is pressed even once for you. 12-hr waiting period so I have "sufficient time" to retrieve my "proper" id? Getting on some purge list going forward for "suspicious voter activity"? I wouldn't put anything past them... And, of course, I was only using my passport because I thought they might hassle me for my license address not matching my registration. They instead got hung up on the fact that my passport doesn't have an address... Welcome to the South!

Yup, exactly. That's the question that actually matters. Tons of Republicans were very vocally against Trump in 2016 too, but fell in line as soon as he was named their official candidate. The Republican Party is great at unifying around candidates and messaging when it counts (probably one of their only legitimate strengths.)

Why does she look exactly like McLovin in a wig in this picture?

My takeaway from the Dr. Pepper Museum is that it's some weird indoctrination shit for school kids about the virtues of the free market and limiting government regulation. It's fucking weird. And you better believe they shoe-horn that shit into every exhibit. It used to be called the Dr. Pepper Museum & Free Enterprise Institute but looks like they may have decided to rebrand since I was there a few years ago. Maybe they realized saying the quiet part outloud in their name was turning people off lol.

What you may not know is that Free Enterprise Education has always been at the heart of our institution as part of our Free Enterprise Institute. From the very beginning, the aim has been to not only collect and display soft drink artifacts, but also to use industry as a model to demonstrate the power of our economic system.

Haha. At my partner's job, IT had to send out an email clarifying some message from a VP wasn't phishing because so many people reported it for being suspicious lol.

It is mind boggling to me that in the year 2023 we're complaining about porn, LGBT existence, and fucking book content. Isn't this what we were laughing at 20 years ago?

It's easy to forget because of how quickly the cultural zeitgeist shifted when it finally did, but the early 2000s was still very homophobic. Watching pretty much any comedy from that era reminds you of just how common the punchline to jokes was just, "teehee they're gay."

I've never tried this, but advice I've seen online is if your doctor won't order testing, ask them to note in your chart that they are declining testing. Apparently the implicit threat of a lawsuit if they're wrong is enough to kick at least some of them into CYA mode.

I imagine they care in the interest of building Lemmy up and wanting to see it grow.

Damn dude, if you're so FUCKING ANNOYED by reddit talk maybe block the community literally called "reddit" and move on?

At work I've been thrust into a support function for some random system (I'm in analytics) and one of the roles I work with is fairly entry level, so lots of younger folk. I have been floored by some of the basic-ass shit I've walked them through. (Like explaining that you can copy and paste the url into a browser if the link isn't clickable for whatever reason. Also had to clarify what url meant--is this not a common term anymore?) I had just assumed that because they're younger and grew up with the internet, they'd smoke the hell out of me. But I guess interfaces are so streamlined these days many got away with never having to learn basic troubleshooting the same way I did as a millennial.
