I know right? Kids don't need any reason to carve penises onto desks and tables and walls. They just do.

One of the older toilets used in a couple of the old school buildings (demolished for a newer one after I graduated) was permanently closed because it became so full of shit.

It was a toilet on a separate building, that was used for a couple of old buildings (one from the 1930's if the local oral history is to be believed), and another one from the 1970's. The stench was so unberable that the classrooms near it were also abandoned.

Oh, the school wasn't infamous for that. I think, pushing shit aside, it's so wonderfully mediocre that it didn't really have anything it was famous or infamous for.

No problem. I understand the skepticism here, especially since the article in the OP is a bit light on the details.

EDIT:

Details on the OP article is fine enough, but it didn't link sources.

I use Anki to keep my French and Japanese from deteriorating any further. Why those langauges? For Japanese, it's the usual answer: anime and manga. For French, I had to learn it in school and I just don't want to let it be forgotten.

A good number of the decks I use for language learning, I made for myself. Those that I've gotten from AnkiWeb were already gone, but here's some similar ones:

  • French Sentences — a collection of French sentences, sorted from easiest (most simple) to hardest (most complex). This deck begins with very simple sentences, and slowly gets harder as you progress.

I'm pretty sure this is an exact, if not a close copy of the one I got a while back.

  • Dictionary of Japanese Grammar - DoJG — a deck made from the entries of “Dictionary of Japanese Grammar” (basic to advanced).

My copy of this deck has undergone significant changes in card design (and function, like showing a random selection of the example sentences), but this one should be similar.

  • Core 2k/6k Japanese Vocab — likely one of the copies of the various Core 2/6k Japanese Vocabulary decks that were recommended to me back when I started. The description I managed to find for my copy of the deck has this description:

Using vocabulary and sentences derived from Smart.FM Core 2k and 6k and sorted by Cangy's program via 2001.Kanji.Odyssey kanji order. This detailed deck is designed so each new card contains the minimum amount of new kanji (and by proxy new words) creating an optimal i+1 learning environment.

I think this is my personal best.

I like the word "yeet". It gives me this mental image of someone chucking out something without any regard or care, like for example: "Even if we yeet the implications of such a statement out of the way, it still is not a good statement to come from the mouth of a head of state in such a meeting." Or: "Don't just yeet your clothes after taking them off, the hamper is there for a reason!" Or even: "Someone yote their banana peel and this guy slipped on it."

People being shitty to customer service workers and utility, and people not being courteous to them.

Heck, I sometimes judge people for not thanking service workers and utility. For example: if a janitor lets you pass a hallway they've been busy cleaning, I'd silently judge you if you don't thank the janitor for letting you pass. Another example is in a fast food setting: if the person on the counter gives you your order, I'd silently judge you if you don't say "thank you".

There's this saying “a fish is caught through its mouth,” and this is an illustration of what it means. This pope might present this ‘cool’, ‘modern’ image to the public, but his words spoken in private amongst his peers reveals his real stance about these things.

Sorry for the title. This post is just me really for me to show off a selection among the photos I took from that trip. I don't think I did the place justice though, as it was really awesome experiencing it in person. At any rate, if there's a better place for posting photos like these (casual cellphone photography), please let me know.

More photos from the same trip below. Please click on the thumbnails for the full-size version.

I used my phone camera (Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G [2201116SG]) for these pictures. Some editing was done via GIMP in an effort to correct some photos' alignment.

Fortunately, there's a modlog for communities here in Lemmy.

Looking at it (currently the third in the list for removed posts), an admin removed it with the reason of “bad news source”. Not saying whether or not it's justified though, but at least we would know who to blame and why.

The following sums up my experience with Linux thus far: "It's never been easier for the newb to jump right in, but heavens help them if they ever stray from the straight path".

There's been a lot of effort to make things easier for a newb (used to Windows and all that shit) to do what they need to do in most cases. There's been all sorts of GUI-based stuff that means for the 'average' user, there's really no need for them to interact with the command line. That's all well and good until you need to do something that wasn't accounted for by the devs or contributors.

All of a sudden, you'd have not only to use the command line, you may also have to consult one of the following:

  • Well-meaning, easy to understand, but ultimately unhelpfully shallow help pages (looking at you, Libre Office), or the opposite: deep, dense, and confusing (Arch) Wiki pages.
  • One of the myriads of forum pages each telling the user to RTFM, "program the damned thing yourself", "go back to Windows", all of the above, or something else that delivers the same unhelpful message.
  • Ultra-dense and technical man pages of a command that might possibly be of help.

And that's already assuming you've got a good idea of what the problem was, or what it is that you are to do. Trouble-shooting is another thing entirely. While it's true that Linux has tons of ways to make troubleshooting a lot easier, such as logs, reading through them is a skill a lot of us don't have, and can't be expected of some newb coming from Windows.

To be fair to Linux though, 90% of the time, things are well and good. 9% of the time, there's a problem here and there, but you're able to resolve it with a little bit of (online) help, despite how aggravating some of that "help" might be. 1% of the time, however, Linux will really test your patience, tolerance, and overall character.

Unfortunately, it's that 10% that gives Linux its "hard to use" reputation, and the 1% gives enough scary stories for people to share.

The accompanying screenshot is taken from a chromium browser. The URL is indeed correct: "punish." It's as if I'm being punished for not using the mobile app.

I've already accepted that I will encounter such a window, and that slider prompt almost constantly when I'm using Librewolf, but having tried accessing it via a Chromium browser, it's the same. Did I break any of their "necessary" trackers?

I try not to use the mobile app because it's such a resource hog, on top of its UX‌ being annoying and confusing, and I'd rather just ditch Lazada than to use their mobile app.

I've got no love for Shoppee either, so I guess I'd just end up saving money (rather than buy stuff), lol!

Anyways, is it just me or is your Lazada.ph's web experience as bad as mine?

Looking at the pages for lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, lemmy.world, kbin.social, as well as lemm.ee paints an interesting, if expected, picture.

For one thing, lemmy.ml is categorized as "Games > Games - Other (In United States)" which made me scratch my head to the point of hurting my scalp. The rest are uncategorized (which is better than being miscategorized, imo).

Now, for the stats:

Instance Total Visits for June 2023 % Change from May 2023 Bounce Rate Pages per Visit Average Visit Duration #1 Incoming Traffic Source (from social media)
reddit.com¹ 1.7B -3.36% 37.98% 6.21 8:24 Youtube (52.48%)
lemmy.world 3.5M n/a² 38.12% 6.62 8:44 Reddit (97.29%)
kbin.social 2.9M +5000% 26.24% 11.2 9:18 Reddit (93.92%)
lemmy.ml 1.5M +1716% 51.79% 5.55 3:54 Reddit (98.86%)
feddit.de 791.7K +5000% 55.88% 2.76 3:57 Reddit (98.31%)
beehaw.org 790.1K +5000% 35.48% 4.50 5:44 Reddit (96.24%)
lemmy.ca 186.4K +1615% 69.14% 2.45 1:05 Reddit (100%)
lemm.ee 167.5K +5000% 29.58% 6.73 5:18 Reddit (86.81%)
  • ¹ -- reddit.com is included as a point of comparison
  • ² -- lemmy.world didn't exist yet in May 2023

We can see that the larger instances are already performing well in comparison to reddit when it comes to "interaction" statistics. It's a surprise, however that kbin.social trounces everyone else it was compared to--even comparing favorably with lemmy.world in visit numbers. In comparison, lemmy.ml performed quite badly especially in bounce rate and average visit duration. Someone who's better equipped than me in analyzing these figures can perhaps do a better anaylsis, but from what I can see, we're not doing that bad here.

I've also added lemm.ee into the mix just for good measure (and perhaps as a proxy for smaller-ish instances), and it's doing quite good as well.

EDITS:

  • Added lemmy.ca into the table as well.
  • Added feddit.de into the table.
