I have other cleaning that’s been neglected too… the clean clothes are unfolded (which isn’t too bad) but the dishes have been sitting and my sketchbook is giving me a look

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 3 points 3 hours ago

Yeah, I’ve been staying up late in case Melbcat needs a top up on her meds while sick, but also things are in general just bad. A lot going on

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 4 points 4 hours ago

I’ve fallen into so many bad habits because I just can’t physically do what I used to.

All I can do is justify it by reminding myself that I am still pretty frugal and have a low footprint in other ways

I thought things would get easier with sunny weather but they’re still really hard. My mood is dipping really low and I’ve not been sleeping well. It’s bad.

I’m noticing the zucchini are wilting a bit in the heat. Makes sense. They’re growing fast but their roots aren’t reaching down to the bottom of the big pots yet, so they would be getting a bit dry.

I was thinking of some drip spikes or terracotta pots used as ollas but that requires ordering stuff. I don’t really want to get it delivered in case of theft and don’t want to pester someone to get it for me. I did see buried plastic bottles with pinpricks in them used for the purpose so I can make do with what I already have. It’ll also be a lot cheaper.

spoiler(The water bottles are for the high pain/fatigue days when I can barely get out of bed. I feel bad about it and never used to buy bottled water but right now am kind of just doing what I can to get by.)

I’ve had a neighbour try to report me to the police for having long grass/messy yard.

Bish, I’m disabled and you’re the reason I’ve been too scared to go out there to fix it

Bonus: They hung over a high fence to take the pictures so it’s not like they would even see it unless trying to

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 5 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Ugh, crazy/malicious neighbours are the worst. Be careful and avoid that one as they tend to target multiple people.

Especially if they try to get you to join them in bullying someone else but you refuse

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 2 points 4 hours ago

I looked with a torch before but don’t see it… it does need a clean underneath though. I’m debating whether moving it is worth the risk of injury

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 3 points 6 hours ago

I feel like life really has become all about the overlords squeezing profit and making the line go up

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 5 points 6 hours ago

I dropped the pill cutter and half an antibiotic tablet has disappeared into thin air…

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 2 points 6 hours ago

Thanks! Yeah it was very likely clicking a bad link and I’ll be more careful. I probably won’t need the NAS setup and could do it manually

Mine is snuggled up to me 🫠

Melbcat is sometimes refusing to eat her wet food which means I have to crush/mix her meds into a syringe, get her in a very gentle headlock and feed it to her directly… not ideal for either of us.

She’s also vitamin B deficient from an absorption difficulty so

injectionsneeds monthly shots at the vet… she should be having them weekly but I’m scared to accidentally hurt her when doing them at home.

I know cats go nuts for brewers yeast and Marmite has B12 (I think Vegemite doesn’t) but it’s salty which is bad for her kidneys. So I bought some nutritional yeast and sprinkled a pinch. Yes, she likes it. She ate some of her meal.

She still needs to be wrangled to give the antibiotics directly, same for the anti nausea stuff which she absolutely needs right now. But I’ll remember this for when we can go back to only the normal meds that can just mix into the food.

The weather is warming up and it’s good to put out water. Especially now I’ve got magpies here.

However I stopped doing it because of potential disease transmission with avian flu. (Especially owning a vulnerable elderly cat - who is kept indoors but could get sick if I tracked something in.)

I’m physically disabled so would have trouble cleaning and disinfecting the water containers daily.

What’s everyone else’s plan for managing this?

I really don't want to do this again

I saw that they weren't going to go ahead last year, but now apparently there will be a pilot.

Sorry, this article is older but has more general information for those who don't keep chooks.

H5N1 affects birds, cows, cats, and humans (and more). High mortality rate. No known human to human transmission yet but it's global, we're like the last place that hasn't got it, and the risk to our birds is now considered high. There's a chance the virus may enter from the north when birds migrate in spring.

Structure and behaviour similar to Coronavirus. In addition to direct contact or respiratory and surface transmission it can also affect the safety of fresh milk and eggs (fact check this but it seems to according to what's happening in America).

Fingers crossed this doesn't become Covid 2:The Electric Boogaloo

This is paraphrasing and may need fact checking. However from what I've seen of the situation in America this can have a greater than 50% mortality rate, affects humans cats and other animals, and is spreading through cows. It seems to be global however Australia seems to be one of the few places still free of it so far.

If we get an outbreak here it's going to be similar to covid with the masks and disinfection, with the added recommendation of eye protection, and the issue of it affecting the safety of eggs and milk.

It doesn't seem to pass from human to human yet? But while we seem to be in the clear for now, let's watch our butts just in case that flip occurs and it gets over here on people or migrating birds.

It could be really sensible to do things like keep chickens and pet birds away from wild birds, wash hands after handling birds, use masks, be careful of having bird feeders, keep cats inside to not hunt birds... you know. Just use caution.

This is what the Greens were pushing for. Will be watching

This is a day old. But if you see this, are in NSW and have those specific pies check the date on them

No telling who could benefit from knowing this exists. Basically the RSPCA keeps your pets safe while you leave a dangerous situation and until you can sort somewhere else to live.

It’s also not the only program like this. There’s are others and also Pets Of The Homeless, who will temporarily foster your pet/s to give you a chance to get back on your feet and reclaim them.
