If it's only been a day, I might wait a bit longer before writing it off. The issue could very well be resolved soon. Even the big tech companies have a service go through problems for a day or two.

I only tested Notesnook for a few days, so I may not remember it's key elements well, but Standard Notes seemed like a very similar product (the downside is the subscription, it was basically unusable to me without paying).

The NotesNook UI is the best I've seen, it's hard to find that level of polish in a FOSS android app.

I think you'll struggle to find what you're looking for without a subscription model unfortunately. If you do want to retry Joplin that is my recommendation, I run it with a locally hosted Joplin sync server, it's fantastic for my use case. It's been recieving a lot of solid updates lately too.

Not the original commenter, but just a +1 for Calyx from me.

It is very easy to install and it clears away a lot of low level Google tracking within the OS itself. It also comes with some nice additions like a firewall system for blocking internet access for that one google app (like keyboard or camera) you still need for whatever reason. Can't recommend it enough.

I saw a lot of concern in the original github announcement regarding the use of the term "license." People felt it gave the team a legal footing to paywall features down the road and offer them only to licensed users, along with a few other concerns based in the legal implication of the term license. That of course runs counter to their statement that no features will be paywalled ever, so I guess there's still some anxiety over their trustworthiness out there. Understandable given some of the rug pulls that have happened in the open source world over the past year though (i.e Redhat, redis, etc...)

I totally agree about the EU, some of the finest pieces of Star Wars fiction are still not considered canon, and that kills me 😅. To put a point on my thought about Lucas's contributions, while he didn't write the finest of Star Wars, he did create the fertile soil it could grow in. It was his strange mixture of Taoism and science fiction that intrigues me so much, and I think it created a rich environment for storytelling and a very visually engaging struggle between the light and dark of humanity. Plus, he would actively draw in EU content that he liked, which is actually where the idea planet of Coruscant came from. Not only does Disney actively restrain and manage star wars third party storytelling, it also (generally) has drained the soil of it's imaginative and creative inspiration. I can't imagine much fiction being inspired by the characters and plots of the sequels, but I actually haven't actually looked, maybe I'm wrong there.

Try this page. You have to go in to the folder that corresponds to your device, the above link takes you to the Arm chipset code which should be good for a mobile android device. You should see the raw button in the right hand corner, and the download button should be near it as well. If you're on mobile, tap the three dots and the download button should show up in the menu.

That's correct. I didn't notice the c/opensource that this post came from, disregard that entry if you're a %100 FLOSS user. I'm still happy to recommend it in general though. It's privacy respecting as far as I am able to verify by their policies and TOS, and it has been a huge quality of life improvement for me on mobile. Hopefully organic maps or other mobile clients for OsmAnd continue to progress 🍻

That was exactly my experience with Florisboard too. It has tons of potential, but I couldn't ever quite feel fluid with my typing on it. It was a relief to see Openboard get forked.

I think its a reflection of the writers more than anything. Trek writers usually try to pull their ideas from current political and sociological issues. AI and genetic engineering (which I think is thinly veiled commentary on gender) are simply the current issues of our time. It is odd that they've chosen the federation to be the problem in the recent shows though. In older trek the federation was always the ones to stand up for the cause and the conflict came from worlds they visited. Of course, that's probably linked to the same idea as the AI/genetics, people are much more frustrated and disillusioned with western government these days and the writers are no doubt exploring that.

So there will probably be changes in the federations stance that are two steps beyond what we see happening in the world around us. Trek has always tried to lead people in a moral/philosophical direction.

If you use KDE, look for the "TV Glitch [burn-my-windows]" opening and closing animation. It's a default setting in the KDE Settings > Workspace behavior > Desktop effects > Window open/close animation section. It's really good in my opinion, especially if you tinker with the open/close timing to make it a little more crisp.

Yeah I'm getting strong ChatGPT vibes here. Confident repetition seems to be it's hallmark.

I can also say it works very well, been running it for a few months now and its been super stable. There has been an odd behavior or two, but I can always figure out what's going on by checking the github issues section. They have a super active community and updates get pushed regularly and frequently

Biggest benefit: has android and iOS mobile clients so you can get the whole family on board.

Self-host

  1. Notes: Joplin server is great, the sync is way more efficient (and private) than using a 3rd party storage service like OneDrive or Dropbox.
  2. Photo Library: Immich photo management server. No clandestine scanning of your images or using them for AI training.

Subscribe

  1. Offsite backup location: Backblaze has super cheap prices on data storage. You can encrypt the buckets with a toggle on BB, but TrueNAS has a sweet automatic backup option that encrypts data before sending to your backblaze bucket.
