What happens when a rhinoceros meets a dragonfly? A Rhinofly is born, a rhinoceros that despite its weight tries to fly, relying on the delicacy and lightness of its dragonfly wings.

Shiro Kasamatsu (1898 - 1991) Japanese Woodblock Print Bird Cage, 1957

All images and text from here

Above, detail

Shiro Kasamatsu - Born in Tokyo, Shiro began studying art at a young age with the painter Kaburagi Kiyokata. He completed his first woodblock designs for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919 after the publisher saw his paintings on exhibit. Shiro designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for many years, becoming well known for his romantic landscapes of famous landmarks and his scenes of traditional Japanese life. From 1952 to 1960, he created more than one hundred woodblock designs for the Kyoto publisher Unsodo. He also experimented with sosaku hanga or creative prints starting in the late 1950s, carving and printing his own designs. Shiro is regarded as one of the top shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan.

Really beautiful photo!

Some years ago, I saw a neat photo collage centered around power lines by some artist

Was it something like this?

Alex Hyner

I posted his work to collage sometime ago

Looking forward to this!

Me and the bf really enjoyed the WTF puzzling of the first season and the beautiful aesthetic, I just hope they continue the quality and don't shit the bed.....

I don't normally comment on news posts, but in this instance, FUCK CANCER

Fuck cancer for stealing my brother from me, and for taking half my bf's lung

I seriously hopes this works for everyone out there living with this disease, and for their families, friends, the people who love them....

.....and also for everyone who has died too soon and missed their chance for survival. Their donation of tissue samples and furthering the cancer research that ultimately wouldn't help them, but will help the poor bastards that are diagnosed today and in the future...It is bitter sweet

Fuck cancer

Rip out the horrible interior, extend, it could look really nice!

In it's current state though, it's just bizarre. It's like an 'upmarket' house in the countryside for sex parties.... Maybe the weird hand wash basin in the kitchen is for rinsing your dick in?

I discovered The CryptoNaturalist over at the other place, and ending up buying 'Field Guide to the Haunted Forest' and 'Love Notes from the Hollow Tree' by Jarod K. Anderson....

Which is unusual for me as I detest poetry. I think it's a pile of long-winded, navel gazing wank...Except for haiku, (because they're short and sweet, and condense things down to their essence, which I like).

I like The CryptoNaturalist though, probably because they write about nature in a weird, beautiful and wonderous way. I want to use the word 'magical' to describe it, but am reluctant, for reasons

Also, thanks to this post I just found out there's a couple of other books available which I'm going to buy tonight 😀

That lady (the pensioner, not Thatcher) deserves either a rise in her state pension and/or a New Year honour, perhaps a Baroness....?

Going back to the pagan winter festival of Yule!

When people would decorate their dwellings with evergreens like holly, ivy, pine branches and mistletoe....and how the traditions of old have been absorbed into 'modern' day Christmas

Prompt-

3 pagan winter creatures, one made out of mistletoe, another made out of holly and ivy, and another made out of pine branches and pine needles, sat around a burning yule log, photo realistic style, ratio 16.9

(I did ask for 3 creatures and ended up with an extra one)

I've just finished season 1 of rewatching DS9 (again) and Vedic Winn has just made her debut...she's such a deeply horrible piece of work, and Louise Fletcher is perfect in bringing her to life

I'm going to enjoy seeing all the nefarious politicking along with Garak and Quark, Gul Dukat, and Jeffrey Coombs staring as Inertial Dampers...

November (and December) are going to be good!

If you like art there's...

!abstractphotography@lemmy.ml

!collage@lemmy.ml

!printmaking@lemmy.ml

also

!traditional_art@lemmy.world

!artporn@lemm.ee

I've curated some other art communities in the side bar at !artistlounge@lemmy.ml including watercolour, art share and one of the photography communities

There are also lots of science and nature communities on mander and beehaw, if you search by 'all' in the communities tab at the top, type and just go down a few rabbit holes...nudibranchs, orchids, botany, minerals, geology, animals and pets etc all exist, you just need to start searching

Happy trails :)

Did anyone else see the words 'David Attenborough....' and feel their heart sink a bit, thinking he'd died?

Then I cheered up, life in the old dog yet, bless him
