Old machine learning joke I used to enjoy cracking at work:

When an algorithm randomly changes things over and over and hopes it works better it's "machine learning" but when I do it it's "horribly inefficient"

That's what the umbilical cord is for. It's nature's leash!

Kudos to Germany for pulling it off. Was also happy to see them mention

Last year [...] the government began rolling out LibreOffice as the default office suite to replace Microsoft Office.

Does the scenario you provided even measure emotional intelligence? I feel like it measires confidence and willingness to confront someone, neither of which feel particularly related to emotional intelligence.

I wasn't suggesting that particular example was for emotional intelligence; it was just an example of a kind of problem solving that isn't covered under IQ. It was a segue into the adjacent topic of emotional intelligence.

They don’t measure creativity, emotional depth, or moral worth - they simply measure a person’s ability to reason and solve problems relative to others.

The frequent misunderstanding of what IQ means probably arises due to the vagueness of the term. "Intelligence quotient" is very non-specific, despite IQ measuring a very specific kind of intelligence. I wouldn't even say IQ measures "a person's ability to reason and solve problems relative to others." The problems found on an IQ test are of a very specific nature. "Complete the following number sequence", "Which of these shapes doesn't belong", etc.

A problem that won't be found on an IQ test is: "Jeff believes his manager has made an inappropriate remark toward one of his colleagues. What should he do?" This is a problem that needs a solution, but isn't within the purview of IQ measuring. You mentioned that IQ tests don't measure things like emotional depth, which is true, but emotional depth (or emotional intelligence) is still intelligence, so the term "intelligence quotient" only referring to certain kinds of intelligence seems like it will naturally be misunderstood by the masses.

I guess my takeaway is that the term "IQ" could use re-branding to avoid this problem.

I do love when this happens. I could probably think of more examples if I took the time, but the first that immediately springs to mind is Buffy the Vampire Slayer pulling a rocket launcher on a vampire.

My mistake. My point is however unaffected.

Nah, they stated,

FYI: vasectomies don’t “go great” as a “simple procedure”

with no further qualifications. That's misinformation. Many people have smooth and complication-free vasectomies; it's been a routine procedure for decades. Of course there are those who have unpleasant and complicated results, but that's not what they said. They just made the blanket statement that the procedures "don't go great". Perhaps they meant the procedures "can go poorly", but that isn't what they said.

I'm a big fan of Time and Date's Night Sky page: https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/night/usa/knoxville

Great for learning about what stars/planets/comets/meteor showers/eclipses/etc should be visible from your location.

And if one is into stargazing, another handy resource is this Light Pollution Map: https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/

If you're into weather tracking, I like both Windy and the regular NWS weather maps for (roughly) realtime weather maps.

And the potential for finding loot.

I've found neat things on the side of the road by walking around my home, ranging from brass knuckles to a case with 3 Nintendo Switch cartridges inside. I tried to find the owner of the games (probably a kid who dropped it when getting off the school bus) but was unable to.

Assuming this isn't just a shitpost:

Yes, calling someone a useless piece of shit when they are trying hard, but failing, at doing something very difficult makes you an asshole. It is the opposite of constructive feedback; it's just an insult. In case it hadn't dawned on you, the guy wasn't just having to solo parent, he was having to solo parent while presumably worried sick about his hospitalized spouse.

Do I blame you for being frustrated and snapping? No, but it doesn't mean you weren't a huge asshole in the moment. Own your mistake and apologize if you have the introspective wherewithal and didn't just make this post seeking validation.

This was long overdue. It had gotten quite thick from various business cards and other cards that had long expired or lost relevance. Now it's down to just the essentials.

Overall wallet thickness is half of what it was before. Nice and slim. I've had this wallet nearly 20 years and it's still going strong.

I'm stoked to have successfully received and decoded an SSTV signal from the ISS for the first time using my cheap Baofeng radio and QSSTV. Took a few tries, but luckily the ISS has been passing over my area several times per day over the last few days, so I've had several opportunities to try it.

Got a nice amount of mileage out of it. Went to go trim up my beard yesterday and it just fell apart. The battery hasn't worked in years, so it only worked if it was plugged into the charger. I picked up the charger and the plastic case around the plug broke in half, and one of the metal prongs meant to be plugged into the wall fell out. And the cable insulation split open, exposing the wires inside. I could've maybe just replaced the charger, but it's some random proprietary standard and the blades on the old one have obviously seen a lot of use, so I decided to get a whole new trimmer.

Got the replacement today and enjoyed a good trim; shortest my beard's been in a few years. It's too hot to keep it so long.
