My parents and all their friends used to use PTT with their Nextel phones. It was a super handy feature. I wonder why it fell out of style. Seemed more convenient and less tedious than a phone call for short communications.

The adage I tend to adhere to is: "The house always wins." Under capitalism, those who have the most capital are "the house".

Companies whose market caps are measured in the trillions of dollars are "too big to fail" insofar as, if a situation arises that meaningfully threatens their bottom line, they have enough weight to throw around to avoid that eventuality. Buy a few congressmen, get some new government contracts, get more favorable loan terms, yada yada. Money talks.

A cursory internet search suggests that no company with over 1 trillion USD in market cap has ever gone bankrupt. At that level, they become somewhat self-fulfilling success stories in the same way people born into rich families are seen as successful despite not necessarily doing anything innovative or clever.

They don’t want to sting you.

Maybe they don't "want" to sting anyone, but wasps can be very territorial and aggressive. Every time I've ever been stung by a wasp, I was minding my own business and just happened to piss one off by existing nearby.

I've tried the mint extract approach before, but it has never helped keep wasps away from our house. I wonder if efficacy varies based on the specific kind of wasps.

Been playing Silksong a couple of hours each day since launch. It's been a fantastic experience so far. Tough, but fair. Great pacing, which incentivizes getting good with the default moveset before expanding it with powerups.

Looking forward to putting some more time into this one over the next few weeks.

I dunno if I'd consider this in "dad joke" territory.

Per the sidebar:

Clean jokes only please. If you cannot tell this joke to a 5-year-old, you probably shouldn’t post it here. Please post edgier jokes to !unclejokes@lemmy.world

If you want a view to count you need to use an official client

I would think that parsing the website would count the same as any browser-based page load, since parsing the website requires first fetching the page (probably using something like wget or curl under the hood). I dunno if non-logged-in page loads are generally counted toward the overall view count on a given video, though.

I wouldn't say Matrix needs 1:1 feature parity with Discord in order to be a viable alternative for a lot of users.

My social circle doesn't typically use the entire suite of features in Discord. Text chat, voice chat, video calling, file sharing, and screen sharing cover our usual needs.

OP says, "with our current current level of technology."

We have the technology to overcome any logistics issue pertaining to eliminating scarcity (and by extension, poverty). What we lack is the societal structure.

And then locations and buildings come to fuck up that way of remembering it, because la biblioteca está allí, not la biblioteca es allí.

True that. I guess maybe it's because a building's location isn't necessarily part of its essence. Or how it feels more natural with respect to a person, e.g.: "yo estoy en la biblioteca" makes sense cause a person moves from place to place. I guess technically buildings can be moved but it's still a bit confusing.

Ahh. I knew about "estar" but I never knew that about "ser". Very good to know!

Also, Spanish has two main verbs for "to be". There's "ser", which is used for things that are inherent (e.g.: "Yo soy de Mexico" means "I am from Mexico"). But then there's also "estar", which is used for the current state of things, or a temporary status (e.g.: "Yo estoy enfermo" means "I am sick (in my current state)").

This was long overdue. It had gotten quite thick from various business cards and other cards that had long expired or lost relevance. Now it's down to just the essentials.

Overall wallet thickness is half of what it was before. Nice and slim. I've had this wallet nearly 20 years and it's still going strong.

I'm stoked to have successfully received and decoded an SSTV signal from the ISS for the first time using my cheap Baofeng radio and QSSTV. Took a few tries, but luckily the ISS has been passing over my area several times per day over the last few days, so I've had several opportunities to try it.

Got a nice amount of mileage out of it. Went to go trim up my beard yesterday and it just fell apart. The battery hasn't worked in years, so it only worked if it was plugged into the charger. I picked up the charger and the plastic case around the plug broke in half, and one of the metal prongs meant to be plugged into the wall fell out. And the cable insulation split open, exposing the wires inside. I could've maybe just replaced the charger, but it's some random proprietary standard and the blades on the old one have obviously seen a lot of use, so I decided to get a whole new trimmer.

Got the replacement today and enjoyed a good trim; shortest my beard's been in a few years. It's too hot to keep it so long.
