so you got a really garage or tiny home?

[–] sga 2 points 3 weeks ago

had almost the same line of thought, that some leader's term got over

[–] sga 4 points 3 weeks ago

no, a friend acquired

[–] sga 2 points 3 weeks ago

i would try to convert it to html (maybe pandoc) and for the interactive part - maybe try to port it to something like js if you can, if not, or maybe python and then integrate with a online python interpreter (something like python anywhere). If it is something very complex, then i would try to maybe package it neatly(ish) and then ask the viewer of documents to run it on their system.

[–] sga 4 points 3 weeks ago

well you are techincally correct, the best kind of correct

[–] sga 3 points 3 weeks ago

much less than half

[–] sga 6 points 3 weeks ago

sorry, i messed up calculation

= (25*(10^9)*1000/(3 * 10^8))/(3600)
23.148148
= (4.25*365)*24/123.148
302.319161

the 123.148 should have been 23.148, i somehow got a extra 1 in there, so that reduced final value by nearly 5 times, hence i got ~300 days instead of ~1500 days

sorry, then number of days should be 1608.346293 (24/23.... * 365*4.25), and total time to reach there is 77200.622084 years (it should be less than this)

Well it depnds on what amount of cost you want to put in, and how are you making the roundabout, and are you going to put something on it, and essentially wht budgets you have. Where I live, we almost always have some statues or soemthing put on them.

They are made with essentially make shift compasses where I live. This is what is done for a roundabout of radius, lets say in ball park of 5-10 m. Initially marking is done (this is simply done by measuring out a tape of desired radius, and holding wwhen end at center, and other person revolvinng around it, and laying down something - could be simple as white chalk, or use jackhammer to make actual indents to ground, or lay down some bricks) This will serve as guide for curve, and any further curved elements could be made by just maintaining a constant distance from this circumference. Then the interior is usually dug to lay a foundation for whatever you put on it (could be as simple as excavating, and just plastering, but that is still expensive, often manually digging and then laying a firm dirt layer is enough). then it is covered with something (could be custom designed pizza slice shaped stone or marble wedges, but usually just bricks or cinderblocks). While making, we do not really make a great curved edge, and just make a n-gon, where n can be 20 or 50 or 100. This is simpler because straight edged bricks are cheaps, and you can lay them vertical, filling the gaps with plaster. The depending on your budget, you could get great finishing, again done with applying plaster, but this time, excess is applied, and some is removed, so we get a curved edge. Now you mostly have the exterior ready. On the top, you could have marble or stone, which can be grinded to match the curved edge, or it could be a thin plaster layer, which will take the shape of boundary.

i just did some napkin maths, and currently, it is approximately 1 light day away from us (23.148 hrs, no relativistic consideration). For perspective, our nearest star is 4.25 light years away, and that is roughly 302.319161 times further than voyager. with voyager speed, it will reach centauri (not actually heading towards it, but just for distance perspective) in about in roughly 14511.319728 years (actually less than this).

edit - messed up the calc a bit, 302... should have been 1608.346293 and 14511... shoul dhave been 77200.622084, explanation in replies - root of errors - typo

[–] sga 2 points 4 weeks ago

Essentially, all children games work - you can just make then hard, or raise the stakes to your taste

musical chairs (song plys, everyone dances, song stops - you have to grab nearest seat - for n players, start with n - 1 chairs, so someone is eliminated - now reduce the chair by 1 and repeat)

atlas - take places names - someone has to say a new place starting with last alphabet of last name.

antakshari (consider it as musical atlas - you start with a song - next song has to start with the last alphabet/sound of lst song)

these 2 can be played in teams, and instead of finishing game as soon as someone loses, you can have pre determined punishments (for example, they have to dance, with 1 leg in air, and a hand over their head)

passing the parcel - song plays - you pass the parcel - when song stops, the person with parcel gets the "gift/punishment" (punishment similar to above)

charades (or dumb charades) - you have to make someone else guess what you are acting/narrating out

[–] sga 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

thanks, it was not intentional though. I don't post or comment often, and so have not been down voted much, and hence do not have a large enough pool to select examples to make a point. Maybe that is just who I am. I do not want to be a hero. Heros have to share their grog/meat with everyone, and I do not want to.

[–] sga 5 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (3 children)

2-3 instances (-50 - -80 combined reply and post downvotes)

  • I called out the usage of word gay to describe a cruise ship (news was in lines of - gay cruise saved somebody) - i said that it essentially reductive to just call a person gay, and we should probably change the phrasing. People misunderstood me for being homophobic, and yelled a lot - I had to explain a lot on why it is not great to call out someone "gay" a gay randomly, as it hurts acceptance. People countered me by saying I am just getting triggered by the gay word, and i must be gay-phobic.

  • I once compared trimming of nails of cat, to declawing them (I know they are different)- got downvotes because people kept re iterating that trimming is not harful at all or it is not declawing (which i already knew and wrote in my original comment), no pain involved, to which I replied that this effects their predatory abilities. Some people replied that for old cats, it is more painful for them to get their nails stuck into things, and I agreed with them. there was no clear resolve. I was more aligned with cats naturally wearing their claws out, others said for indoor cats it is hard to do that. It did not help my case that I am not a cat owner myself, and so "I should not have a say on how other owners treat their cats)

  • I once made a post "to preach" non violence (this was after some "eat the rich" and "kill the nazi" posts after trump re-election) - got a lot of backlash - people called me out to be too naive, they say it never works, then i gave sources of it working elsewhere, then they say circumstances were different, then I gave them american examples, they proceeded to yell back at me. Maybe I was confused of being trump supporter.

I sometimes forget Internet is a hivemind, and nuanced converstaion is basically impossible. People often start calling me out stuff, and then start focussing on grammatical/spelling mistakes instead of the actual argument. I hoped lemmy would be different, by the votes I see on many "political" posts, I am reminded that people are really no different. It does not help the fact that I moderate a few communities, and I have to read stuff. I understand that we do not like musk and trump, and I am okay (actually happy, but that is a seperate point) that their are protests happening and they are taking Ls. But If I call out, that we should not consider their "depression" a "uplifting news" - I am called a fascist supporter. I do not understand how quickly or far do people make jumps from a point a to point z.

Sorry for the rant

I had this effectively a shower thought idea - why don't we have ceramic 3d printing?

Let me clarify - before posting, I looked it up, and I could not find exactly what I was looking for. There are already commercial offereings for Clay 3D printing, but that is not forming the ceramic in situ, we are depositing what is effectively ceramic in a solvent, and drying it. What I was thinking was making the ceramic on site.

Here is a example setup

  • Imagine a regular polymer 3D printing setup

  • imagine instead of filament, we have a tank of Ca(OH)~2~ (calcium hydroxide, or slaked lime) (not necessarily just this, but for example, consider this combination)

  • imagine we instead of droping a full thread like layer of semi-solid polymer, we form a trail of really tiny water drops

  • we sprinkle in Ca(OH)~2~ onto the drops (or this step can be skipped if we can pre mix it with water, and then somehow figure how to deposit really tiny drops of what is effectively a very strong base

  • now we let CO~2~ in, and form CaCO~3~

  • deposit a layer to fill voids in this layer (we dropped a non continous strings of drops earlier)

  • evaporate remainning water

  • repeat this step until this layer is complete.

  • repeat process for next layer

Now I can think of many problems here

  • how to handle very strong base - maybe a tip of refractory alloys, or something like Inconnel (or Ni Cr alloys in general), or ceramic (maybe alumina) coated metal (probably cheapest, but hard to make)

  • how to control solidification - we are effectively doing a solidification reaction, and growth of crystal would largely be dependant on the crystal facettes, and we would not be able to have any sharp angles. Also, we would not be able to have a very small width with this.

  • surface tension of water will not allow to easily create uniform small dots - only thing I can think of is using something mechanical to hit the water droplets at tips to effectively launch tiny droplets. (Imagine shuriken (stars or blades) breaking droplet, and water landing) - still we would not have control

  • how to control solidification rate in exothermic process - maybe easy, but we would need something like fans or coolant, otherwise we would form big drops at a spot due increased nucleation rate

  • how to introduce CO~2~ fast enough - we would have to have a very strong CO~2~ environment, somehow not let it solidify at tip. Also this reaction is very slow (maybe that is only the case at bulk solidification). Maybe the whole process would be very slow

Does this process already exist? If it does - any resources related to it would be helpful. If not, Why? Is it because we have not been able to solve the issues I listed, something I did not list? Would this be practical (economically)? I can definitely see both artistic and engineering use cases, and both of those can allow some big budgets.

Lets submit a India entry - !lemmyvision@jlai.lu

We will submit a song (by replying to this post) - and others should vote (upvote or downvote) any existing submission they would like to too - the most upvoted song across all three India communities (listed below) will be considered as our submission. Song requirement is basically - Something released in last 1 year (basically Jan 2024 to March 2025) which is openly accessible (that is not paywalled, so anything on youtube works, and so does non premium spotify, patreon, etc. stuff)

Hey everyone!

I hope you’ve had a wonderful year and are ready to discover new music, because the Lemmyvision song contest return now for its second edition! For those not in the loop, read below to learn more about this Lemmy Event:

TL;DR

From right now and until April 1st, discuss with your country’s community on Lemmy about which song to send to the contest. Submit the song in this community by makign a new thread. On April 2nd, voting will begin, where you will rank your favourite songs in a form. Any song not submitted by this date will not be featured. On April 8th, results of everyone’s favourite songs will be published. You can use !lemmyvision@jlai.lu for any question, this will be the community for updates and results, make sure to subscribe if you’d like to stay in the loop. What is Lemmyvision?

Lemmyvision is inspired from Eureddision (itself a reenactment of the Eurovision song contest) which was held on r/europe some years ago, and based on the participation of national communities / instances and the delicate musical taste of their members (you!).

Every country/community is welcome to participate! The contest follows the rule of “national languages only” but regional languages are welcome too, if your community would like to feature a song in a regional language of your country, that’s awesome. The aim is to promote different languages and cultures from around the world, to share more between our online communities across Lemmy, and discover songs from lesser known artists.

Last year, an exception was made for the programming.dev Lemmy community to participate by sending a song related to their main interest (they sent a video game soundtrack), if your community does not represent a specific country or language but wants to participate by sending a song related to your instance center of interest, you’re welcome to do so! For example, lemmy.blahaj.zone could send a song composed by a Queer person!

How it works:

This post, and the !lemmyvision@jlai.lu community will be open until April 1st, and I will start promoting the event on various instances and communities. Lemmy communities who want to participate have the responsibility to gather its members and vote on a single song to send for the contest. On April 2nd, the songs will be locked in. A playlist will be created to allow you to listen to all of the submitted songs, and communities will be invited to vote on their favourite. The voting is estimated to last for about a week. On April 8th the results will be published, with a ranking of everyone’s favourite songs!

I don’t expect countries with a “small” population to be accurately represented on Lemmy, so no worries if you don’t have a community and are just a small group of people, or if your country is not even on Lemmy but another platform (Kbin and whatnot), I can make exceptions, just reach out!

Regional languages are welcome as well! Basque, Welsh, Cherokee… You’re welcome to promote a non official language instead!

Song submission:

Each Lemmy community is responsible for their own organization. Only one (1) song is to be sent to represent your community. If the song contains vocals then it must be in (one of) the official language(s) of your choice, or a regional language of your choice. Songs must have been released within the last year (after January 1st, 2024). Songs must not be international hits[1]. Submit your songs in their own thread in this community Verification will just require a link to the discussion thread created within your community, to ensure it’s a community (not a single person’s) decision. [1] this is to prevent drama that happened in the past on Reddit, where Germany sent a Rammstein song and obviously won. It’s up to my own appreciation of what international hit means, because it’s hard to measure (metrics on youtube or spotify aren’t the same), but I’m pretty lenient, just ask me if you’re not sure, better to discuss it than argue

Voting:

Voting will be done through a form created on tally.so. I will set up the form near the end of the month, and share it in a new announcement post when the time has come. If you’re worried about privacy, there will be no questions about personal data, and last year I deleted the form and its results a week after the event was done. On Federation:

I don’t discriminate based on instances, if your account is not on the same instance as your community, that’s totally fine. Additionally, if you’re on another Fediverse/Activitypub platform and would like to participate, and you’re able to federate with your representing Lemmy community, you’re welcome to join us, I’d just like to keep organization within Lemmy so it’s easier to track participations.

Would you like to help?

Last year went really well, and I managed to handle the thing alone. Programming.dev even helped with setting up the playlist! If you’d like to help in any way, please feel free to reach out, I’d love to have as many people as possible involved!!

Cheers!

This is (in my opinion) one of the single biggest achievements of humanity.

Image of Sagittarius A* black hole at center of our Galaxy, taken by Event Horizon Telescope team. This one is also refined with magnetic field lines.

I don't remember what was the exact source for me, but one of the possible ones is https://s3.amazonaws.com/cms.ipressroom.com/173/files/20247/66c7d3d62cfac2492a9bdd54_Sagittarius+A/Sagittarius+A_hero.jpg. I just made it grayscale, some dimming, and resizing, to not cover whole of screen.

A message of Non-Violence (en.wikipedia.org)
submitted 4 months ago by sga to c/usa@lemmy.ml

I don't want to write a very long post, but I just wanted to remind everyone about this.

I recently learnt about protest on February 5th, and just wanted to spread this. The wiki page has a huge table of non-violent protests.

I know many people are disheartened, and in such circumstances, people often resort to violence (sometimes to send messages, sometimes in response to another violence, sometimes in catharsis).

I am from land of Gandhi, and a huge admirer of his work. Many people even in my country today feel Gandhi was useless or found him problematic for n number of reasons, some partially valid, many not, but this post is not about him. What I want to highlight is his idea of Satyagraha - it is essentially a exercise in (and for) truth. 2 famous non violent movements of his time being civil disobedience and non-cooperation. Names give the core ideas away - but essentially - break laws peacefully. To elaborate - 1 of them was against a salt tax law. They just made salt, and did not pay tax. It was both literal and symbolic, in the sense that they stopped paying taxes - and EIC were hit both financially and political power wise.

And these are not the only peacefully protests our land, one of the most recent ones was a farmers protest (for context, in India, majority people are still employed by farming), and roughly after a year of protest, they got there demands met.

I wanted to add a US specific example, and I can't think of anything better than Stop War protests regarding Vietnam War.

TL;DR - Peaceful protests work, you just have to be persistent

Dreams are basically simulations of our lives that we run, sometimes with different physical constants, resulting in different worldly behaviours. Fever dreams (not necessarily during a fever) are when we are sweeping over a range of constants, so behaviour keeps on changing.

Old title - Tolerance - Is violence ever justified?

For reference - https://lemmings.world/post/19791264 and all comments below the post about tolerance and non-tolerance

is it too naive for me to believe any and every lives matter? I do understand if someone is coming for my life, and i stop him by retaliating back, most nation's laws would deem me innocent, maybe even most people will - but was it right?

It has not happened with me yet, and this is post is not politics related, a general discussion about tolerance, but I dont know how will I respond to such a situation, Is there a correct approach?

I know in a imaginary utopia - we can have a society where everyone thinks any violence, or for that matter, any evil deed is evil. And I know real world is far from being a utopia, but i believe most people can differentiate between good and bad. In my opinion, most people who do such acts are not really doing it because they enjoy it, some do because they have to, some think they have to, and they have been brain washed.

I also think if we ask a binary (yes/no) question to everyone - Is violence justified" - most people will vote no. I know there would be some exceptions (even in perfect utopia's like N. Korea, lords only get like 99% majority)(/s).

Now if we change question - "Is violence ever justified" - many will now vote yes, and start listing out situations where they think it is valid.

This question was also brought up in Avatar. For people who don't know - should Aang (a person with firm opinions, and more importantly a child - 12(112) years old) kill Lord Ozai (for now, consider him embodiment of evil for simplicity, but still a human). Many shows get away from asking, by basically having monsters (non human) as the opponent, so it is does not feel morally wrong. But here the question was asked. His past lives (in this world reincarnation exists, and aang is the Avatar - person who can control all elements) also suggested he should kill him, and he is tethered to this world, and this is no utopia ......... In the show they got away with basically a divine intervention.

Maybe here is my real question - Is it correct to have your morals be flexible?

Now for my answer, I have almost never felt correct labeling people good or bad, I have almost always treated people depending on what the situation expects me to (maybe how I feel I should be treating). In some sense I have a very flexible stance, and in some others, I dont. For example - I never cheat on exams or assignments - I can't justify cheating, If I am getting poor marks, then I should prepare well. But If someone else asks me to help them cheat (lets say give assignment solutions) - I dont refuse either, as I have understood, even though judging people by a few numbers is bad, world still does that - mostly to simplify things, and in that sense, a higher grade for anyone is better for them.

I dont even know what can be a answer. I dont know if it exists, or it can exist, I am not really trying to find it either, consider this just a rant at clouds.

edit - I am not asking a binary question - you are not expected to answer a yes or no, see the line just above this edit. It is not even really about violence - it is about morality

edit 2 - Changed title, old 1 is still here for full context. I dont know why I chose that title. I am not blaming anyone who answered on the basis of title, It was my bad to have some title, and ask a "not really orthogonal but generalised question" in the middle, hoping people answer that, some one did, I thank them. Many people have written (or in similar vein) - violence should be be avoided, but not when it the last thing. I understand this general sentiment - but according to me - having a excuse to ever do violence allows you to have loop hole, just blame the circumstances.

Someone gave a situation where they would do violence - someone trying to assault a kid - and I agree I would too (If I would be in such a situation).

I had a small back and forth with someone about morals - my stance is morals are frameworks to choose if a action is moral/immoral. And then the question is really how rigid should your moral framework be, and should it depend on background of people in consideration?
