Thx for this!

Though sadly most of the ones you've listed seem dead, very small, or inactive. I'm guessing there's still not much on here yet, so do you know of anything outside of Lemmy? I've been trying to search but can't find anything besides strictly regional stuff.

That sucks a bit I won't lie, no idea how somebody like me is supposed to already know exactly what they need, from who, how, where, etc. but I guess I'm in the minority here haha, no worries. Also thx!

Just anything that can act as a hub/referral place of sorts to direct me to where is most appropriate for my needs or for whatever I need to consult with an expert on; legal, financial, employment/work, immigration, social, mental, safety, etc.

Can't find much on here, only found some regional UK and Canada/US stuff but that's about it, nothing general or international or anything. Where should I be looking if Lemmy doesn't have anything?

Looking for general stuff, just something to help me figure things out as I'm not an expert or anything, not familiar with these things at all.

With the recent changes to how Google is doing things with Android, is it even worth it anymore? Should I just accept whatever version of Android comes with whatever phone or are custom ROMs still worth it? Assuming they still exist after all of this, idk what's going on.

It's totally fine, no worries!

And again as I've said before I don't wanna distro hop anymore, this isn't my first distro (but am not a linux expert or anything, very much a normal/casual user here), jumped around a lot for a good while now before eyeing up Fedora to be my main, have a good idea of what I want and so am focused on the long term and reliability of the thing.

And well, you kinda said it yourself haha, it's up to date but stable, and it's basically taken the place that Ubuntu originally held as a jack of all trades of sorts, that's literally it, that's my reason for being interested in it, Ubuntu has been extremely hit or miss for me in regards to stability and updates (literally the system at one point nearly bricked itself when trying to upgrade and am now stuck on a specific Ubuntu version forever because of it, the updating thing seems completely borked for me, can't upgrade it without wiping the whole thing and this isn't the first or last time anything Ubuntu based has done this to me before, updating it is very dreadful for me because it's a complete gamble), and as far as I know Fedora seems to be a lot more stable and polished on that front, haven't heard anything majorly bad about it.

That's good to hear, well alright then, what legal stuff would be concerning if I may ask? Heard at one point they were gonna get rid of hardware acceleration or something because of legalities or whatever?? But then changed their minds? Idk, stuff like that worries me a bit haha.

Really appreciate the in-depth explanation, thx! I'll take a look at the links then.

So with all of this considered, do you personally think it's safe to go with Fedora long term? Even in a worst case scenario? And if not then what else should be considered for me?

I also am curious about Fedora's whole "leading edge" thing, do they push for new technologies even when it'll cause issues or are they careful with it?

Thank you for the kindness and patience, it's really appreciated.

Can you elaborate on that? Again I live in a very shitty part of the world, there's barely - if anything at all - here for people like me, and it's also risky, could be fatal for me to reach out locally and expose myself.

It's alright I understand, but different people have different lives and experiences and are treated differently, keep that in mind, not all of us are fortunate enough most of the time sadly.

Well, do you have matrix? We can talk there if you want.

But again, reason why I'm asking for a general professional/consultant of some sort is because I have a lot of life hurdles and their all linked together, don't even know who exactly to look for for what or how, and one field is not enough to tackle all of them, and getting dozens of professionals for each one of them and somehow trying to juggle between them doesn't seem realistic or doable at all, though idk how any of this works so maybe that's just how it is.

Sorry for the late reply, appreciate the comment though.

See, the thing is, ask people for help and they'll usually say to seek a professional instead, and when I ask where exactly do I find these professionals they shrug and either go silent or tell me to just ask others, no clue what to do with any of that.

Regardless it should be a given to not rely on internet strangers for life issues - let alone very serious ones and multiple of them at that, that's never gonna go well, not everyone knows everything and they can't all be expected to fill in the roles of specialists and people with experience and keep up to date with all the bullshit of life and how to navigate it all, so I need professional help unfortunately, no getting around it for better or worse. So no, I'm not "better off" doing what you've suggested, trust me I've been there.

Also like, another obvious is privacy and confidentiality, not a good idea to go into detail on these things on a public internet forum.

Do you know of anything that might be helpful or no?

I'm not super tech savvy or familiar with the linux world much, nor do I know anything about the drama behind these things, so please bear with me.

Heard a lot of bad things about RedHat and vaguely know that they have a lot of influence over Fedora and things like Wayland, which I'm planning to make my main OS sometime soon. How concerned should I be in the long term if I settle with Fedora? Don't wanna constantly distro hop anymore, Fedora is the closest thing to my needs for now.

Congrats! What's your use case like then? How long is it on for usually? Have you noticed any other issues like dead pixels or dimming or what else?

[–] sso0rrllo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago

No worries! It's still very much appreciated, thx for the in-depth explanation!

'Black magic optical fuckery' I like those funny words haha.

Though one thing that I still don't understand is why the Q stuff uses blue light over white light, I heard it's supposedly better for colours or something? How so? Isn't blue light in OLEDs especially the most likely to degrade first or something?

I also heard about different versions and tunings of the LCD panels that try to fix their inherent disadvantages, i.e. IPS black, Fast VA, etc. how are those made?

[–] sso0rrllo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They still seem to do if you push them which is what I'm worried about, using one as a PC monitor probably would qualify as you "pushing it" as you'll inevitably have long periods of static stuff up frequently for hours, my use case definitely leans towards that rather then causal on and off usage.

it's definitely gotten better overtime it looks like but it's still very much a thing which I'm anxious about, not helped by how expensive they are, no idea how it'll hold up for me.

Though I heard different organic compounds last longer and behave differently then others, do you know what 4th gen QD-OLEDs use for their pixels?

[–] sso0rrllo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I did, only got told some general pieces of advice, followed them, and narrowed it down to the motherboard and or the CPU. I fumbled severely on its initial power on it looked like, bricked it just like that...

Thx for that! Didn't know those even existed, I'll definitely look into it later. Might not be useful for some things though as I need the length of the screwdriver to reach certain areas that I otherwise cannot.

For me it's less of a learning experience and more of a "the consequences of your incompetence" situation, guess I'm in the minority here but I just can never avoid making mistakes and I always gotta deal with the consequences of it. It is what it is I guess, it really sucks though.

I see. Yeah it's super confusing, but thanks for the explanations, really appreciate it. I wish microLED would be ready, cause right now there sadly just isn't anything that can fully rival OLED on the picture quality, there's a few super rare awesome LEDs out there but none on the level of OLED right now, and again very rare to find.

I definitely have major concerns about OLEDs as I recently got one and am anxious about that burn in, it's a monitor and I'll be using it as any other monitor per my needs so I'm a bit worried haha, I'll try to take care of it obviously but I still wanna use it as a monitor.

Should I make another post somewhere asking about OLEDs longevity or?

Not the most tech savvy person so please bear with me.

What exactly is it? What's the difference between it and something like FALD? Are they the same and it's just different marketing or are they actually different? How is there different versions of it like an IPS or a VA? How does that work? How does it compare to something like OLED or QLED?

Usually I keep to myself on these things but curiosity is getting me this time around, probably gonna regret posting this considering how toxic the internet and people in general are, oh well, just wanna see if I'm the only one dealing with this or not, literally not asking for anything else.

Basically I'm at a very bad place in my life, built my first small PC ever recently after saving up for a few long years, and of course as I'm a complete noobie and have pretty unsteady hands I bumbled my way through it, made some scratches on the case here and there that I'm very upset about considering how much I paid for this thing, it could've been worse and it's thankfully nothing crazy, the noticeable scratches are all around the screws and the like usually hidden by the panels or behind the main components, but I still get genuinely upset looking at the small scratches when I mess around with the case and realising that was completely avoidable if I just had been more careful or patient or saved up for better easier to manage tools, even looking at other noobie builds it seems I'm the only one that bumbled badly enough to leave noticeable scars around the screws and other spots, and it's a really cute looking PC as well so I wanna enjoy looking at the little thing, it's gonna be right next to me on my desk afterall, and if I ever inevitably need to upgrade something or tweak something or even just clean it then I'm inevitably going to make small or major mistakes and scratches will build up as a consequence of it, not even mentioning my expensive and fragile monitor that if I so much as look at funny it'll scratch up, though if any comments on the internet are to go by I'm "overreacting" and "need a therapist" so, not a normal reaction I guess, haven't found or heard much of anyone out there being super bothered by stuff like this even on stupidly expensive parts.

Also bricked my motherboard BIOS somehow in the process and can't figure out how to save it, obviously very upsetting just when I thought I had finished everything up, might be completely dead and if so then that's that, done completely goofed, gonna start everything all over again and wait for god knows how long to inevitably repeat the process and probably make the same mistakes again as by the time I can afford any of these components again I'd have forgotten everything and be in an even worse physical/mental state to boot to manage my unsteady hands. So I gave up and am in the process of searching for a local technician/repair shop in my region to help (probably should've just started with that tbh, I'm at fault for that), which considering I live in a shitty part of the world is not easy, and for all I know they might make everything worse and handle it 100x more roughly then I ever would, no idea but not much else I can do, I'm so tired and am not a professional on anything obviously haha, am clocking out basically.

I dunno just rambling I guess, not the end of the world or anything - especially if my motherboard is saved and everything else functions in the end (fingers crossed...), I'm even surprised i didn't light the whole thing on fire by some freak mistake considering how badly things usually go in my life haha, but idk my minds so stressed out by so many things in my life that just keep pilling up and getting worse and this just had to happen to add to my already high amounts of, well, everything, when I wanted it to be a brief moment of relief and achievement, but nah I guess, can't ever catch a break.

Anyone can relate or am I just extra weird?

Legitimately no clue where to look, I live in a very shitty country with nothing regional for me, so no options there, and everything online is exclusively US or UK only it seems, and even then most of them aren't free which I can't afford, and it's only for very specific fields and for specific countries only, nothing general or anything to refer me to the appropriate person or group for what I need.

Need advice on basically everything, am extremely lost in life and am stuck in a very tricky situation, no clue how to navigate all of that without professional help, it's a little too much. No friends or family to turn to so it's just me on my own, sorry if I'm supposed to know all of this already or something but I legitimately don't, please bear with me.

I have no connections so I tried resorting to AI for referrals as a last resort but it didn't do anything for me, still can't find where to go and who to talk to.

No clue if anyone here knows of anything but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask, anything's appreciated.
