If you are who I think you are, we've probably had this discussion before. Even with an always on VPN, if the system runs out of memory it will kill the VPN first before the browser. In a perfect world the traffic would still be routed into a dead tunnel. From what I've seen, once the VPN is killed, the tunnel device is gone and the default route snaps back to wlan

You're right. I'd argue that lemmy has the advantage of not being so popular, and that the mindset is by default more counter-culture than status-quo (otherwise we'd still be on the major sites), so I do think that the people here tend to pile on less.... though I do admit that there are plenty of pylons here

Then you can exclude the VPN app from OOM.

I didn't know about this feature. what's the config?

[-] tetris11@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I think it was more that people were prone to ask rhetorical questions in guise of actual discussion

Also, if you have a limited RAM smartphone and your VPN is operating in userspace, then all it takes is for one really large image to grace your smartphone screen for your OS to go into out-of-memory kill mode. What's it going to kill? The foreground app you're trying to use, or the background VPN app.

In my experience, the VPN goes down before the browser does. Mounting a swap on your phone is not the worse solution against this, but the UI starts to get really unresponsive.

I was homeless in Brussels once. Someone stole my backpack with my passport in it, and just like that I was stateless. It was over a weekend, and the embassy to my home country was closed and wouldn't open until Monday.

No food, no money, no water, I had nothing to do. I walked all over that city, really got to see every interesting corner of it. It's like 5 different countries smushed into one, and you can see french/german/british influence almost everywhere. There's an overpass that cuts right through it at one point, occupying nothing underneath and that's where the migrants gather on Saturday mornings to host their wares in this long unyielding impromptu market.

I slept in their parks, talked with their police (who didn't believe my story), and even struck up a conversation with a random Canadian I met at the train station, who fitted the stereotype to a T, and gave me money so I could get by another day, asking for nothing in return.

When Monday rolled around, I took a nice leisurely stroll to the embassy and got an emergency visa, ready for the long bus trip home, and genuinely sadly bid farewell to that beautiful crazy mess of a city. It shares a special place in my heart, bureaucracy be damned.

You don't need to be smart. Back in my uni, there were student initiatives to record the questions and answers of previous exams. The Math department itself gave out previous years exams to study from.

The key to remember: exams aren't written my professors, they're written by the postdocs who have better things to do, and so they just rehash the same stuff from the year before.

If you want to get a useless piece of paper that tells you that you are an expert in topic X, then don't learn X, learn to pass the papers for the X exam, and learn X later in your free time if you're still interested in it.

Kids are Reddit. If they sense weakness; the others will pile on.

One shining star will talk about the injustice of it all in the aftermath, and everyone will privately forgive themselves and conveniently forget until the next time it happens.

The solution is to be arrogant. Insist your position in their society and force your presence. If you show you have self worth, others will be forced to grudgingly acknowledge it

I've got 3 degrees and have a Gold Duke of Edinburgh award (if you do bronze, silver, and gold, you get to shake hands with a failed king)

  • Never went to any graduation ceremony
  • Never went to Buckingham Palace to shake hands with Prince Philip.

I am right now, sitting at home in my jammies eating burritos. I regret nothing.

I mean music videos that have nothing to do with the music and mostly just do their own thing and tell their own story.

An example --

Basement Jaxx's Red Alert seems to be about a meteor-worshiping cult awaiting the arrival of their rocky messiah in some unsuspecting greasy spoon cafe in the middle of nowhere.

Once the meteor crashes into Earth, everyone gets horribly mutated and convulses to the strange rays exhibited by the meteor. The infection seems to be localized entirely within the cafe. The End.

Edit: Please link to a video, or at least summarize the plot.

Edit2: Please actually link to a video, or tell me why the video plot is cool. Come on, it's just 30 seconds of your time.

Any good open source projects that do this?

I've see MLC-LLM, but their last release was a year ago and it's not clear how their android app was made[0].

There's also MLLM, which has an impressive github demo page, but surprisingly few issues or contributers, also leaving to me to think it might not be real[1].

Does anyone have any local LLM providers on their phone that they trust?

One option of course is to run ollama through Termux, but I want a more appified experience.

At the end there's a lot of matching up going on, except for Fiona who is practically photoshopped into a gag image of Prince Charles.

I feel they did her character a big disrespect, as she was easily one of the more interesting female characters.

Three of the main characters were the same actor, and yet there are shots with all of them in the same scene. When I saw this as a young adult I didn't even notice that Mike Myers was playing three roles and was genuinely dumbfounded years later when I found out.

How did they do those scenes so seamlessly?

It's a 2016 game. It has cutesy pixel graphics. That's literally all I know, but it has been spamming my frontpage for two weeks now, despite me not being subscribed to this community.

Why now?

... and now for the resolution! I took all the suggestions from Last Week's Comic to heart and tried to come up with something that satisfied most of them:
