PiHole unfortunately doesn't work against YouTube ads - at least it never worked for me. It's good for everything else tho. You would have to use ublock origin on desktop and an alternative YouTube client (like newpipe or grayjay) on mobile

Edit: THANK YOU EVERYONE, there has been so many great ideas, and it was really eye-opening. I've decided to save up money for now in case of an emergency, and surprise them with something this Christmas. Also will make sure to call often, and visit them when possible. I'm seriously grateful to everyone who has shared their opinion!

I've recently moved out, so I can no longer help out with household duties (like cooking, cleaning, gardening, etc), which is what I used to do to help them - mind you they are not elderly, still actively working, so I just wanted to help them have more free time for hobbies and such.

Since I'm no longer there physically, I can obviously not help with these anymore, and they are both very much against the idea of spending money on cleaners, gardeners and such (to be fair, I'm also not really into the idea) - they are also very much against the idea of receiving money from me. The problem is, I don't know how else I could help, if I can't chime in for household expenses.

I'm really curious what others do to support their family from afar without directly sending money being involved?

Not sure if I'm being out of the loop and there already is, but this would be a good time to introduce a remaster of the old games - this year already has some great (Beyond Good&Evil) and promising (Soul Reaver 1&2) remasters

Not having access to your phone and having to log in on other computers doesn't rule out using password managers at all. You can use bitwarden's web vault (or self-host vaultwarden). As long as you can log in to bitwarden web vault, you can access your passwords anytime, anywhere.

Okay, now this, I'm hyped for. SR1 and 2 both are pretty dear to me, so these are phenomenal news! This year is strong on reviving my old favourites - first BGE 20th anniversary (it's wonderfully done), now this. I do hope they add some new content similarly how BGE did - something that expands on, rather than changes the original game. Now the wait begins, 2 months is nothing!

I will never understand why that 2 lines in the terminal bother anyone. It's a free service. Free as in free beer. If you use the terminal, you are tech-savvy enough to disable it, if you don't use the terminal, you'll not see it anywhere, at all.

While we are at it, they advertise all of their products like that in the terminal, not just Ubuntu pro. Landscape and microk8s both appear like that on an ssh login.

That's already a thing? It's called Ubuntu Core and is aimed at servers for now.

They are working on a desktop edition which is what you are probably referring to - it's a very interesting idea imho, they basically containerize the whole system, kernel and DE included. Will see how popular or useful it'll be, but I can imagine it being used in embedded devices for example. In my understanding it's going to be like most immutable distros, but with snaps instead of flatpaks.
