Man, if only Disney could figure out how to promote the anime that it has rights to, it might actually make some money with Disney+ (probably not though). Instead, they are all left to wither away in Disney jail.
I have spent all weekend traveling (for vacation this time, not for work). So, it has been a series of flights, layovers, car rentals, etc., but we finally made it to sunny Los Angeles to visit some of my wife's family. All of that is to preface that I will probably not be very active for this week (or next) because of this. However, most of this past week, I was still able to watch stuff. Also, I have thoughts...
- Trigun (1998) - My wife and I have been slowly chipping away at this series. We are currenly up to episode 13. Overall I have enjoyed it (she has seen it before). However, the humor definitely feels dated at times, especially with how lecherous so many of the male characters are. If Master Roshi or Jiraiya bothered you, then so will this show.
- Oshi no Ko Season 2 - These past couple episodes have been phenomenal. So, so glad this season has been able to deliver after a bit of a slow start.
- Tower of God Season 2 - This season has felt like a letdown compared to season 1 for me. I am up through episode 6 and just don't feel invested in this whole new cast of characters. The peak of the season for me so far were Khun's parts.
- Love is Indivisible by Twins - This show has continued to deliver guilty pleasures. Lots of drama, while keeping the actual stakes fairly low. Naori is a pop-culture reference machine though and I can only keep track of half of what she says.
I have had to drop a couple shows for time: Quality Assurance, Plus-Sized Elf, Spice and Wolf, Dahlia in Bloom. I am probably going to try to pick some of these back up again after my vacation.
person who appears most in his “happy memories” is Kana
The person it ends on is Ruby 😜
I do like how they animated his dark thoughts with the highlight of his glasses from his previous life inside a literal dark swirling cloud of emotions.
Summer has settled into a bit of a groove. So, here is where shows that I have been watching currently stand:
Really Enjoying
- Oshi no Ko - Been enjoying this arc, but it might not be for everybody.
- Alya - probably the biggest surprise of the season for me. It's been a lot of fun.
- Love is Indivisible By Twins - Big guilty pleasure show full of drama, like a love triangle should be.
- Pseudo Harem - just a half hour of two people flirting.
It's Been Good
- Tower of God - Second season has been quite a big change from the first, still adjusting.
- Dungeon People - After a strong open, this show has settled down into more of a SOL, but I am hoping that they keep some intensity.
- Nokotan - This show has tons of humor, but it doesn't always land for me. Plenty still does though.
- Spice and Wolf - Continuing from last season, this show has been moving pretty slow, but still keeping up with it.
Let's See Where This Goes
- Isekai Quality Assurance - Willing to give this one some more time to see what they do with the premise.
- Dahlia - First couple episodes have felt like a prologue, so willing to see what happens now that we are through that. The animation has been pretty poor though.
Probably Going to Drop
- My Wife Has No Emotion - Sometimes you win the adaptation roulette, and sometimes you don't. This one didn't for me, so I will probably just stick with the manga.
- Plus-Sized Elf - Yeah...they cranked the fan service dial to 11 when they adapted this, and I think it is probably just too far for me. There just isn't enough there to keep me coming back each week.
Agreed. I loved the first season and am really looking forward to another.
I had a little bit of time today, so I thought I would check this out before a lot of other shows get going for the season. Overall, it was fine. I think Alya is a kind of fresh take on a tsundere in that she verbalizes her tsun in Japanese and then verbalizes her dere in Russian.
I was kind of surprised that we learn so early in the story that the MC also knows Russian. I had figured that might make for a good reveal later. He has to basically act like he doesn't understand in the same way that Miko has to pretend not to see ghosts in Mieruko-chan. Speaking of Mieruko-chan, this show reminded me of that in the fan service that felt a little out of place. Like, if Alya is too embarrassed to speak to the MC, why is she suddenly teasing him Nagatoro-style with stockings?
In any case, I think there is good potential here, so I am going to try to give it another episode or two. I think a lot of the success or failure of this show is going to depend on the banter and chemistry between the main pair.
@rikka@ani.social I am in this screenshot and I don't like it.
Really happy to see this. I really wasn't sure if this was going to happen or not. I don't have a good sense as to whether this series is popular or not. Apparently it has done well enough to continue the adaptation.
Now I can't unsee Zelda in this character design...
Maybe technically not anime
Looking into it a bit, it seems similar to a fan project, but an original story. I think this wouldn't be allowed if it were the anime subreddit, but I don't think we need to be as strict in this community due to the currently much smaller volume of posts and discussion threads. The creator isn't Japanese (Irish), but it does primarily feature the Japanese language and anime stylings.
Also, it's the weekend, so...
I see that the pregnant pause joke is going to be a recurring theme this season. I think it worked better last episode with Eris, but it was still funny this time. To be honest, I was surprised to see Kazuma get his money from Vanir. I always expected that promised payout to be "almost ready" in perpetuity.
It seems like the next arc is going to be Darkness focused. She gets the prophecy about her family, there is some competition she is training for, and then that scummy noble is looking at a portrait of her on the wall. Speaking of her training...I guess it is going well? She seems happy at least. @rikka@ani.social
My favorite part of this episode was Vanir. He is such a ham and the way he can create humor through selective application of his abilities is top tier stuff.
I actually really like the design with the shells for eyes. Until I read the text, I thought they were fireworks or something like that.
Is this something they have done in the past or is this because they are holding the Expo in Osaka next year?
