Alternative frontends? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Caligvla@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/div0@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I just saw that FMHY got some new frontends for their users (Alexandrite, mlmym and Voyager) and I was wondering if there are any plans on doing something similar? Right now I'm using the default Alexandrite instance to access Lemmy, but I'd feel a lot safer not having to share my credentials with a third-party hosted by god knows who.

Some of you may have noticed a lot of people freaking out about CSAM and a bunch of communities closing, instances restricting registrations, turning off image uploads or shutting down completely. It's a bit of a chaos.

Fortunately your admin has been fighting this fight for the past year so I have developed some tools to help me out. I repurposed one of them to cover lemmy images

Using this approach, I've now turned on automatic scanning of new uploads.

What this means for you is that occasionally you will upload an image for a post and it will stop working after a bit. C'est la vie. Just upload something else. Changing format or slightly altering the image won't help you.

Also, sometimes you might see missing thumbnails on post from other communities. Those were the cached thumbnails hosted by us. The original images should still work in those cases.

Unfortunately this sort of AI scanning is not perfect and due to the nature of the beast, it will catch more false positives but to an acceptable degree. But I find that this is OK for a small social network site run as a hobby project.

Cool? Cool.

Hey mateys, as I mentioned earlier I have been forced to migrate the Database to a new server as it grew out of the previous location I had it.

This is why we had around 20 minutes downtime just now. Fortunately this is the only downtime I've had to do so things seem to be running smoothly. Likewise we've fortunately been spared from fediverse drama lately, so the personal time requirements are still low.

The new database also gives us plenty of space to grow so things should stay stable for a while until I have to consider more upgrades. Unfortunately it also means that the cost of running this instance have also increased, so I'm increasing the 6-months goal I've set.

Please consider donating a grog or subscribing to the instance costs here: https://ko-fi.com/db0/goal?g=77 and you can get you own personal custom emoji for your troubles :)

Hey peeps. Our little instance is getting a bit too big for its current DB hardware, so I am forced to start preparing a new DB server. This will lead to some downtime soon while I migrate the database over. Please bear with us if this instance goes offline for a bit in a couple hours.

Another announcement will arrive when I'm done

Notice how the comments aren't loading, the pins aren't pinned, and the upvotes aren't equal. There aren't any comments if I try to view them from the db0 instance. Is there a reason that this instance isn't grabbing my communities' info from LW?

FINAL-EDIT: I'm not sure what was the original issue, but tweaking uMatrix setting fixed it for me and it's also working for the user that reported the problem.

EDIT: It may be an issue with (the many plugins I have on) Firefox, it works on MsEdge. I will try to debug it a bit more.

Example: this post image is visible from lemm.ee and mlmym.org/lemm.ee

But not from lemmy.dbzer0.com

I tried with these 2 links and none of them work:

There are other examples on the same community:

Thanks

We have nice theme etc, but can we have alternative? Only dark theme is bad, so please add default lemmy ui as option. Also, if possible more ui options always good: old reddit https://github.com/rystaf/mlmym, alexandrite https://github.com/sheodox/alexandrite, voyager https://github.com/aeharding/voyager). It can be as subdomains for example.

Upgraded to 0.18.3 (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

The Divisions by Zer0 have been upgraded to lemmy 0.18.3. This should bring performance enhancements and fixes on the sorting mechanisms.

Remember you can support the work needed to keep this instance available for all using Ko-fi,

I like to keep up with fresh content and new stuff, so I usually sort by new, top hour, or top 6 hour. The latter is usually good, but if course limiting. I find the the first two, however, are dominated by posts from lemmit.online. For those unfamiliar, this is an instance used by the lemmit bot to repost content from reddit. While some of the content is interesting, a large chunk of it is discussion posts where the op is on a different network entirely, such as aita or programming help requests.

I don't find these posts to be very... Quality. If it were a possibility, I would block this instance entirely. How do others feel about it? Am I taking too strong a stance? Is this content a positive contribution?

The update got released a few days ago and I read that it fixes the hot sorting of posts. And from what I experienced it is even faster in loading speeds.

~~Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t this instance located at social.fossware.space before? Anyone know what happened?~~

~~I’m particularly interested because my main Lemmy account was on the fossware instance which seems to have disappeared overnight. Not sure if it’s just temporarily down, or was migrated here. I definitely can’t log in to lemmy.dbzer0.com via my old account.~~

Edit: Sounds like the two instances are unrelated. Fossware just seems to be down. Hopefully just for server maintenance!

Is Modlog Broken? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/822979

For the past 2 days or so, I tried viewing modlogs for several instances and the loading spins forever.

Now I just checked the mod logs and the logs were purged?

What the hell is going on?

Hey everyone, today I sadly woke up to a distressing email by my provider, telling me that "Waves Audio Ltd" (http://waves.com) sent them a takedown request about a guide posted to crack their app. This is complete bullshit of course, but the provider threatened to shut off my whole IP address. For now I've taken down the post, but I've also initiated measures to avoid this in the future.

As such, we've now moved this site to be hosted by njal.la which is privacy focused and has a ton of experience handling such issues. Let me know if you notice anything weird during the transition period.

However they are significantly more expensive! As such I've had to adjust our server costs for the next 6 months, and therefore our Ko-fi goal has been re-opened. Please consider donating to ensure this site can survive these particular gray waters we're sailing.

I aim to ensure we are strictly legal, but these companies do not care about the law because they have enough money to bully people.

Remember, do not post direct links and use base64 encoding for any potentially spicy links you post!

http://mlmym.org is a custom frontend for Lemmy. It mimics the Old Reddit style, and works on any existing lemmy instance. You can sign in to your account, and make posts. In fact, I've made this one from it!

Custom Emojis Are Back (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/div0@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I had disabled our custom emojis due to the recent exploit but now that we've upgraded to 0.18.2, these should all be fixed. So I've reuploaded them.

Also reminder that if you've bought us a grog on Ko-fi, you can request to add a custom emoji for yourself added, as a little bonus. pirate captain giving the thumbs up

I asked and enough of you answered that allowing to federate with threads.net even for the lolz would be considered too risky for y'all.

So I've gone ahead and added threads.net to our blocklist.

Updated UI to 0.18.2-rc.1 (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/div0@lemmy.dbzer0.com

You probably seen around a dozen posts today about lemmy.world getting pwned, so I'm not going to rehash things.

Fortunately we have a lot of active devs at all times now, so the issue was quickly identified and fixed. This means a new UI release is out, which I've just deployed.

For those wondering, this instance wasn't affected. Even though we had custom emoji, it required a local account to exploit. I don't know if the attacker was discouraged by our registration application form or applied and got denied, but thankfully I didn't wake up to a clusterfuck :D

That is to say, your accounts in lemmy.dbzer0.com weren't at danger, even if the problem comments were federated over. This exploit targeted instance admins and aimed at some good ole defacing and chaos monkey shit. It's like we're back in the late 90s!

However you advised to keep proper hygiene in your lemmy experience, in this server as well. This particular exploit didn't steal passwords but it could have theoretically given the attacker access to your lemmy inbox. The lemmy PMs should not be considered secure in any way. Not only could an attacker compromise you and get access to your inbox, but a malicious admin with root access can just straight up read everything in the DB directly. So don't put anything important in there! That's why we have matrix!

Hopefully more thorough patches will be applied soon as well.

Title:

PSA: Lemmy.world has been compromised!

Post:

FYI!!! In case you start getting re-directed to porn sites.

Maybe the admin got hacked?

Images:

First, some random video show up, I'm not gonna watch it in case its NSFL content.

Second, the website tries to redirect me, but uBlock Origin blocked it

The Front Page

Side Bar got messed up.

Everything else seems fine, here is the signup page with the Lemmy Version visible.

Also notable comment from the Original Post:

Yea, I switched to this alt. It appears to be one of the assistant admins accts. Seems like an old fashioned anon prank, to me, they’re mainly just trying to make stuff offensive and redirect people to lemonparty.

So, y’know, old school.

I don’t know if any data is actually in danger, but I doubt it. I don’t see why assistant admins would need access to it.

Edit: Someone else said an admin's credentials was compromised:

One of the admin accounts appears to have been compromised. The owner/other admins appear to be aware now because that account had its admin access revoked and offending posts are being removed.

Definitely opens up a big question about the security of Lemmy instances that I am sure will be discussed over the next few days.

@db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com be careful with making admins. And secure your passwords, use 2fa, etc...

Edit 2: Now the entire front page is filled with posts regarding the lemmy.world hack. Interesting...

https://i.imgur.com/VvxiphP.jpg

Edit 3: Lol a post was made from the hacked account claiming the hack was fixed, but that account is still under the hacker's control:

https://archive.is/hRytN

Edit 4: Lol this is actually funny:

https://archive.is/wbQ2f

"Site has been seized by Reddit for Copyright Infringement" Lmfao

Edit 5: threads was put on an allowlist, and lemmy.ml was put on a block list, every thing else is under "linked instances". I wasn't quick enough to get a screenshot or an archive link.

Edit 6: lemmy.blahaj.zone just got hacked too!

I urge all instance admins to temporary defederate from lemmy.world and lemmy.blahaj.zone as a safety precaution.

The Zuckiverse and you (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Hey peeps. By now you all heard that Zuck's meta has started and in a defederated mode. This instance has already signed the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact and we plan to not help improve the value of Facebook, if and when they plan to open federation.

However I am thinking we can have a bit of fun beforehand.

You see, Threads is extremely sanitized in order to be "corporate friendly". Naturally this makes their service as exciting as a bowl of plain porridge. However in order to keep their corporate partners happy, they are also extremely cautious about anything controversial and will likely defederate from anything too spicy.

So why not use this an an opportunity to make Threads defederate from us?

What would you say that we leave federation up, but use the opportunity to share with the larger threads populace some important information about filesharing? Sharing is caring after all and we have plenty of knowledge to give.

Naturally, if this doesn't work, we will defed them ourselves soon after anyway, but I expect it will. What say you all?
