I'm still having a hard time understanding what niche this marketplace is supposed to fill and what Epic's plans for it are.

I have a real life example. Let’s say you’re an artist that does photorealistic renders for architecture firms. You switched to Unreal Engine like everyone else because it’s reasonably priced and quick to work with. You need some assets to do that because you definitely need more than basic materials. There’s plenty of industries that are in need of high quality assets, and most importantly, are able to afford them. Epic just wants their own digital marketplace monopoly like Valve or Apple have.
