You don't think nearly 4 million extra users are going to hurt supply?

[-] YarHarSuperstar@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

It's mainly because of a manufacturing issue. Increased demand is certainly a factor but there is undeniably much less stimulant medication available than normal from manufacturers.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago

So there's multiple factors. Including people wasting the supply.

The government actually limits how much each manufacturer is allowed to produce, that's the actual cause of the shortage.

this right there. actual synthesis is pretty easy, reliable, well developed no matter if we're talking about amphetamine or methylphenidate

Then it's a pretty dick move to try and cheat with it isn't it?

[-] hex@programming.dev 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Dude people are gonna do drugs either way. Whether it's a dick move or not. It doesn't matter

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

They aren't even actually good for cheating on tests. I'd understand if they were getting high.

People are trying to use them like performance enhancing drugs for academia. But of course, they don't work like that for normal people.

[-] hex@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

I guess, but aren't we using it as 'performance enhancing' to be on the same level as other people? Like glasses. If someone who didn't need glasses wore special glasses that helped them see better, would it be cheating? Maybe, actually. I'm not sure lol

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I'm not talking about people with ADHD. These are normal people trying to do this even though studies show it doesn't work that way for normal people.

[-] hex@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, and it allows them to focus for longer than usual, they don't have the same calming effects as us, but there are performance benefits at the right dose for anyone (even non adhd folk)

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

The research doesn't support that though.

[-] hex@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, clearly they're using it for a reason right? They wouldn't be seeking them out if it didn't do something good for their studying.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

It provides a feeling of euphoria and thus a sense of confidence.

[-] hex@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

I think it's a bit more than that. I'm not disagreeing, though, I think most people abusing it also have ADHD. I know I wasn't diagnosed through school and when I found out about stimulants I definitely used them to study.

Self medication is certainly a possibility.
